I couldn’t find a thread for this. So I made one. This game has been known about since last year I believe. It’s now coming out in a few weeks. While originally just for PC, it seems they decided to put it on consoles, which is probably why it didn’t come out 2019 like originally stated. It’s plot is a pretty basic revenge story. The bull shark you play as is out to kill the hunter that killed its mother. The gameplay has been described as a little like Dark Souls. The game as whole seems to mix Jaws Unleashed with Hungry Shark. Me, I’m just looking forward to playing as a Shark!
Good to see this finally coming out, think this was first announced at the E3 PC Show about two or three years ago IIRC. Would that make this Shark Souls or Dark Shoals?
Maybe it’s just that this seems cut from the same cloth as Jaws but doesn’t have the excuse of a lack of understanding about sharks and their behaviour - Peter Benchley has expressed regret over the negative image sharks got from his novel and the subsequent blockbuster movie based on the same - and as such just comes across as......I dunno, tasteless and exploitative. However in its defence, it’s a new(ish) IP, and something other than an open world modern military third/first person shooter that’s totally apolitical man, nor a micro-transaction infested load of shit from UbiSoft or EA. So, okay in balance I guess?
Based on the tagline said at the end of that trailer - "eat the people, save the world" - it sounds like the game might be trying to portray the shark is heroic somehow. I mean, all realism is out the window given you evolve electric powers or something, bullet time dodge against drug cartels, and I'm guessing getting revenge on fat Capt. Hook for killing your mom?
That stereotype is not going away no matter what, cause once a stereotype is out there, it’s stuck. Now maybe if this was a more serious game, I’d agree with you. But this takes a page out of Hungry Shark’s book and goes full on crazy with the shark eating everything in sight.
Yeah I know, and I’m not blind to the fact that sharks are dangerous - they most certainly are - and wild encounters with them can be terrifying at best and tragically fatal at worst. I just happen to be very fond of them (he says from the comfort of his landlocked state). Anyway, I’m rambling like a twat. I hope the game is fun for everyone who plays it
I’m the same way, swimming at Tiger Beach is on my bucket list. But, there’s always movies about sharks galore, but there’s never enough video games.
It seems pretty apparent that it's more in Goat Simulator territory then anything that's supposed to be taken even remotely seriously. Personally I'm all in favour of Sharks eating people that fuck with the oceans, it's not like they hang around coastlines flinging their shit at our houses like we do with them.
I agree with you and I like sharks too. Very fascinating and frightening predators. And I'm of the firm belief that if you go into their home, you risk getting maimed/killed/in need of new undies and sucks to be you. Alternately you could see this game as the shark winning for a change? I mean, I can't be the only one who sometimes rooted for the big killer animals in scary films right?
Lol I actually spent about 2hrs watching gameplay of this. Game looks fun but I do wonder how long until it feels repetitive.
