    From MT's Facebook page:

We're pleased to introduce you to the Maketoys Crowdfund!
Unlike other exclusive items, MTCF is aimed at fulfilling the expectation of our fans, even if the desired project is a little too niche for mass production...

I take it this is sunstorm? Not sure if I’d get him, but do a retooled slipstream that’s more than a plain repaint and I’d support it as much as humanly possible.

Hmmn, not thrilled at a company doing it's own crowdfund without the protection (however limited) of an independant platform like Indiegogo or even Kickstarter. On the other hand, Maketoys are at least a reasonably established company and the reality is the established platforms don't offer a lot of consumer protection...

Don't really need a Sunstorm, maybe if they did a generic purple clone version... maybe.
I'm guessing this platform is probably going to be mainly repaints... at least for a while.

I feel this is a little weird. A very established company doing a crowdfund? Is it weird or is it just me? Perhaps because it's not a character as popular as the main seekers. Not saying it's a BAD thing either.

I would support this if I didn’t have to pay in full up front. Anyone see pay later as an option?

I am semi interested, but is this now going to become a trend with 3rd party, first Maastoys, now Maketoys, how many crowdfunds are going to now appear, and how many people are going to support each fund, knowing the product is a year plus away?

Is this any different than MMC/Planet Steel taking preorders for Ravage but would only go ahead and produce the run if they have enough support (i.e. enough preorders)? Can you pay the crowdfund using PayPal? If yes then that can be your protection.

I don't care for the MT Seeker mold so it's a no this time, but I'll keep an eye out for future products.

The way it looks makes me think of Dreamwave (I think it was) Sunstorm who was insanely strong rather than the background G1 character from the toon. EDIT: Or not, new pictures were uploaded as I typed.

Basically they don't think enough people will buy it to bother making it (they don't want to sit on a ton of them in their warehouse, and retailers don't want to sit on a ton of them either), so they are giving people the opportunity to prove them wrong by showing there is demand.

I believe the first one was "Play with this too" which was basically Pretender shell action figures but that failed. Then there was Unrustable Bastards (not strictly Transformers themselves, but at least 1 stretch goal included a repaint to a Transformers character). Then came MMC Artfire, though that was more due to the official MP Artfire being announced.

3P TFs aren't able to use one of the established crowdfund platforms, they'd get C&D'd by Hasbro.

Wow, just realised the seekers are rainbow colours. They're like the LQBTQITKSNWW reps of the Transformers universe.

Even if you can pay with PayPal (doubtful Maketoys would want that due to PayPal having strong consumer protection at the expense of merchants) that wouldn’t help. Protection only lasts for I think 6 months? Very few 3P products are turned around on that timeframe. Given the time required to fund, get everything sorted, queue up factory time, manufacture, paint, assemble, deliver etc... 6 months would be a crazy short time frame. A small delay and your screwed.
More I think about this, the less excited I am about this trend. Been bitten too many times in this fandom by upfront payments. Also need to see some T&Cs. Crowd funding has been embraced as a way for companies to get money without being required to produce something. Otherwise this would be considered a pre-order.

I don't see an issue with them doing the crowd funding, its a way for them to produce the figure and mitigate the risk of loss.

That being said I'm probably not going to go in on this, I have hasbro versions of sunstorm and acidstorm and while I was happy to swap out the main seekers i'm not overly fussed for bit part characters like those.

Maketoys is a small company, a failed project or two, could potentially put the company in the red. Crowdfunding is a great way to neutralise that risk. Moreover, Maketoys has a proven track record.
