i haven't seen this film yet But from what I recall nothing in DOFP would nesscesaraly change much from the first film
This is why I feel Logan is set in its own timeline. That way I can avoid the headache of trying to figure out what events from the previous movies happened. I figure in this alternate Timeline, some of the events from the first movie happened, and some of the events in the subsequent movies happened. For sure Apocalypse never happened and neither did DOFP. Oh, and only SOME of the events in The Wolverine happened in this alternate timeline. Boom. No headache.
Yeah, I have to admit, usually I'm a continuity stickler, but I can't give 2 shits for how this fits in the X-film timeline. I'd be content in it just being kinda on it's own, or maybe the hypothetical universe where Singer actually directed X3, instead of the revision at the end of DoFP.
Spoiler No the New Mutants film is going to take place in the new timeline. McAvoy has been reported to be playing Xavier in it and, while not cast yet, the team is basically going to be the original group. Cannonball, Sunspot, Warlock, Magik, Wolfsbane and Mirage. Reportedly it's going to take place after Age of Apocalypse at some point. Honestly, I think Logan may be the last film that takes place in the original continuity (albeit the fixed one from the end of DofP).
I think its still feasable that logan wouldve Spoiler known yashida from his time in WW2 and thusly couldve still been involved in the storyline of the wolverine. Just with a different intro where yukio goes to fund him at the school instead?
If it's the one altered by the end of DoFP, then how can it be the original continuity? Altering the timeline created a new continuity.
The way the current continuities were described by Singer in a fairly recent interview (sometime around the release of Apocalypse so before another director came around unsupervised and muddled the continuity of Fox's X-Men films even more) was that there were two timelines as of the end of DofP. There's the new timeline that starts with Apocalypse that leads into whatever the future is going to bring with future films. And there's the future shown at the end of DofP with the original trilogy cast. Singer stated that the events of Apocalypse and future films wouldn't necessarily lead to that future as things were already different. And he considered the future ending of DofP more of a "corrected version" of the original timeline and a way to give a positive send off to the original cast and retcon out the events of X3 for the fans. So, based on what he's saying, there's a "corrected/altered version" of the original timeline and a new timeline that's being written out with the new X movies starting with Apocalypse. I'm of the personal opinion that Logan takes place as the ending of the "corrected/altered original" timeline. They aren't looking to give an ending to the new timeline started in Apocalypse at this point as that would just box them in if they had to adhere to that while writing future films. Especially seeing as the introduction of Cable in Deadpool 2 which will lead into the assembling of X-Force is going to open up all sorts fun timey wimey stuff. Unless they remove his time traveling characteristics. Alternatively you could also look at Logan as it's own continuity that's still loosely connected to the others as simply one potential future. Just as the Sentinels were one potential future. In these films time seems to be pretty malleable with few fixed points.
I'm going to chose to look at it like the comics. Multiverse. Each movie, while similar, is its own thing.
Isn't it sad that not even a semblance of continuity can be carried from one movie to the next. It's the Allspark cube. No, wait, it's the Matrix. No, it's the babies being grown on the ship. How about creators? Yea, THAT'S THE TICKET!
