The live action Nimh movie has a director! Note they said they don't want magic in this movie so no cool scenes with magic or glowing eyes on the great owl. It will just be a scary owl. No floating house at the end also. It will be based more on the original book. (never read it but man no magic is a no buy for me. I'll stick to the cartoon version.) Oh course that might changed as it's been about two years when this film was first announced. James Madigan to Direct MGM’s ‘Rats of Nimh’ Movie The original trailer.
Magic was never really central to the story in either version. Bluth basically just added it as an excuse to show off those awesome sparkly effects--which obviously wouldn't be the same in a live action/CGI version. The book is mostly the same, but slightly less dark and with no amulet.
I was never fond of this film, I preferred the novel it was based on better. I hope it stays more faithful to the novel anyway.
Very interesting. Will be keeping an eye on this, hopefully they try to remain more faithful to the novel. Even though I still love the first animated film.
i can see how doing this movie without the magic, really is the only proper way to do it. if you are going to remake a movie, at least it is good to see that they are doing things that are different. hopefully not too different. but just different enough to do improvements over the original. the one part of the movie that i really didn't like was the magic. can't wait to see them do secret of nimh 2; return of pinky the brain.
Missed out you have. Great story, and voice actors (for the time). Like many movies of this kind, the sequel left lacking.
It's also a powerhouse of excellent hand-drawn animation. It was Bluth's first feature film after leaving Disney, and he used a book license that they had previously turned down. It was basically a shot across the bow, rubbing in Disney's face everything they'd forgotten how to do at that point. In other words, it's freaking glorious.
And now it's a fox adult animated series next to family guy. ‘Rats Of NIMH’ Animated Series Based On Books In Works At Fox – Deadline
I remember the original book version got a lot of mileage being used as a class novel in the 4th-6th grade levels in my Elementary School in the late 80's-start of the 90's era (back then, 6th grade was still in Elementary Schools while Middle School was only 7th and 8th grade).
