President of Toei Announces Plans for CG, Live Action "Saint Seiya" Movies List of Saint Seiya films - Wikipedia I suppose this has as much potential, both good and bad, as the other adaptations.
Yeah, whenever they adapt something that requires loads of effects, they always end up turning it into a slowly paced drama with a hand full of action scenes, to save money.
I don't even think the stories and characters suit live action. I can think of a dozen other 1980s Jump series that would suit live action better.
Saint Seiya is based mainly on Greco-Roman mythology, isn't it? I think that gives it a good chance in live-action.
If you've ever read the comic or watched the cartoon, you'll know what I mean. The costumes and the action are all fine. But it's the style of characterization... I don't really think it's suited for live-action. But I guess we'll see.
My wife (being from Brazil) is a huge Saint Seiya fan. That said, she has little hope that a live action adaption will actually be any good. I have to agree with her even with my limited experience and knowledge with the franchise.
It will depend on how well the armors/cloths are designed too. This series is too anime to be a live feature.
"Saint Seiya" Inspires International Live-Action Production "Polish illustrator/animator Tomasz BagiĆski (cinematics for The Witcher games, Oscar nominee for shor The Cathedral/Katedra) helms. Yoshi Ikezawa and Joseph Chou of Toei Animation will serve as producers, along with ARGF founder Jeffrey Chan, who is also COO of Bona Film Group. Tim Kwok of Convergence Entertainment, Miguel Faura and Kozo Morishita of Toei Animation are executive producing with Kurumada." Checked out Baginski's work, he's very impressive.

Well, the director for that Clash of the Titan remakes years ago said the god's armor was inspired by Saint Seiya's cloth design, so there's that. As for the CGI...I watched that on mute last night and my Japanese friend saw it too, he said it reminded him of Saturday morning cartoon animation. But neither of us knew they change Shun's gender until I read about it.
Ugh. Why would they do that?! Never mind. I know why they'd do it. But it's so misguided. Oh well, maybe he'll still be a guy in the Japanese version.
Some more news. https://www.reddit.com/r/SaintSeiya/comments/n32opb/saint_seiya_live_action_movie_update_baginski/ - Though the film was announced in 2017, it took four years to come up with a good script. - The film will be an original tale that will not adapt any of the manga/anime story. - Famke Jannseen (X-Men Jean Gray) has signed up as producer. She may act, but it's not certain.
It took 4 years to come up with a story that doesn't have anything to do with the original story at all. Sensational. Typical Hollywood idiocy.
Why would that be a good thing? Why not just create something new then? Something vaguely similar but it's own thing?
