The Decepticon Pretenders are monsters, but they aren't especially related to Energon in any unique way. If the Energon Monsters were meant to be Pretenders from the start, then that would mean that the dropped characters Mark referred to were different Pretenders. So the dropped characters were either 1.)different pretenders, or 2.)new characters. There's no evidence to support either way, but given the absence of break-apart characters in Legacy and the overarching theme of Energon, I personally believe they were new characters.

If only Mark replied to questions in his Instagram comments like Sam does, we could ask him for clarification there.

 

Don't get me wrong, the variety is great, it's just that I'm very much a single issue guy. Year 1 gave us two perfect Cybertron updates so it's the best Generations line Hasbro has put out so far, and year 2 is giving us two Armada characters so it's a lot better than average but I'm not nearly as invested in, say, how well hot shot will turn out as I was in how Override turned out. Having a passing interest in two leaked mainline figures really is a lot for me but it's not much compared to the disappointment that they don't seem to be keeping up the pace of Cybertron updates and they've already run out of voyager slots

 

We don't really know when whatever the Decepticon Pretenders replaced were dropped though. It could have been before the listings leaked last year, which seems likely as Mark said John Warden told them to do the Pretenders.

 

You're misunderstanding me. There's no evidence to suggest that the Energon Monsters were anything other than a production name for the pretenders. We don't know what the pretenders replaced, therefore it cannot automatically be assumed that the Energon Monsters were something else, especially considering that moniker made it to store listings, something that only gets created after a product lines lineup would be finalized. Those dropped characters were likely dropped well before those store listings were created, even if they were dropped "last minute".

 

That is a good point and something I did not consider. This is purely me spitballing so in all likelihood a moot point, but if the Energon Monster listings were supposed to be Pretenders, then shouldn't the listings have been for "Pretender"? We do have a couple "Junkion" listings for next year that I assume will end up releasing as Junkions.

 

Velocitron Scourge's listing (and even his shipping box) call him Black Convoy, so store listings don't always line up with the final name of a release, and then there's other times where store listings are done with code names, like they do with G.I. Joe Classified figures. A lot of times those code names even make it onto the shelf tags.

 

I wouldn't expect any line to be Cybertron or even UT centric really. I am still surprised that Kingdom was as BW focused as it was, and nearly half the figures were still 84-86 G1 characters. Best we can hope for is 3 or 4 characters from different eras filling out the lines evenly like next year.

I am sure he will come eventually since he is a major and popular character, just that it will take time. Even the G1 Dinobots are taking multiple years to get done and they are the damn G1 Dinobots, arguably the Transformers most popular and well known team. Just because they aren't doing a character right now doesn't mean we will never get it.

That wouldve been bad idea imo. People would have really high expectations and expected them to come with a shell and the smaller bot. I can already the high amount of disappointment when they wouldve seen skullgrin for the first time and his really boring alt mode.

 

I was going to argue that it's more likely that we'll get a maximal before we get another predacon, but I realized that we've actually got an even number of absences: Quickstrike and Rampage for the preds, and Depth Charge and Silverbolt for the maxs. Weird.

 

Well we did only just get Tarantulas and he is one of the most prominent Predacons.

 

I hope we get the new character BWs before the transmetal versions of old characters.
