IMHO, it has the same problem as the live-action Patlabor series: it takes a smooth and fairly realistic looking mech, and then tacks on all kind of extra detail (thick panels, handlebars...) that seems to serve zero real-life purpose, making the live-action version look like crap and fake.

Some recent Gunpla purchases..... well, if you can count a couple of MS Hangar Bases as Gunplas, that is:

I'll allow it. It's a diorama accessory kit. I don't count Action Bases in my build tally since they're just display stands.
The one I have on my work bench I painted with a gunmetal mix so it counts as a "Build."

Give them time, this is the first one I've seen. The mini stands I bought in bulk have more colors now than when they did the first time I bought them. Then there are the Action Base 2 clones that have a full spectrum that even Bandai hasn't made.

Meanwhile, I had to go to Tractor Supply last night but went into Hobby Lobby for a minute, and they are now stocking up on runner stands; those hard plastic racks that look like a broiler trays, for $6.99USD. Might be useful for those interested in them, but the way I clip parts off and and cut apart the runners makes them useless for me.

    Todays haul!

Got in first proper 00 kits, a proper Astray as well as the color inversion(I rebought that one as I lost a piece :( ). Amazing Exia, and a 1/150 Shinto Shrine. I figured 1/150 scale is so close to 1/144 it should fit in fine, but wow is it tiny.

Yeah, you don’t really feel how huge a Gundam is until you put it beside one of those RG pilot figures (or even one of the 30mm bases with human walkways).

Display pilots are *mostly in scale to their respective kits.

    RG 1:144

    9ee94275-9e42-42a0-8243-906ae38c33bb-1_all_1340.jpg

    MG 1:100

    * = mostly where the display figure and pilot figures aren't the same size.

    20201011_004839.jpg

Left is the 1:100 scale for the MG Exia R2/Amazing/R3 (since it's Setsuna's adult sized pilot suit), center is the upscaled display figure and on the right is the proper 1:60 scale pilot seated for the PG Exia.

If you ever have the chance to visit any of the life sized Gundams, you'll see the scale is pretty spot on. A grown adult is about eye level with the bottom of the Diver City Unicorn's ankle armor.

Sadly, I could only see it vicariously . and have the experience building it at home.

I usually hate to deviate from the instructions on first-time builds but I had to do the inner frame first for this one.

Fully justified, it's an incredible frame.
    -

Skirts in progress and filling in the silver and gray between the chest and shield.

    20240518_231749.jpg

More on the other bits when I get to them but the skirts are turning out good. I undercoated the armor with gunship gray and painted the lattice with silver.

    20240518_233908.jpg

Getting set to work on the weapons, I had the idea to paint the beam sabers.

    20240519_012655.jpg

Silver emitters and a red band to compliment the Zeta's red on black scheme.
I want to cover up some coarse areas from sanding the nub marks so I will repaint the handles in flat black.

    Immortal Justice!
Really cool design, although the suit itself feels like it lacks features even compared to regular Justice (no removable backpack, the back cannons can only be fired in MA mode, the swords and boomerangs are combined so there's less melee weapons onboard)
I do understand it's supposed to be like that, since it's battery operated and supposed to be a more "held back" version, but still felt like it got a raw deal compared to Rising Freedom lol

The inner frames of the newer RG kits are too detailed not to show off! IMG_6989.jpeg IMG_6990.jpeg

Where I left off last night, the sabers are done.

    9ee94275-9e42-42a0-8243-906ae38c33bb-1_all_45327.jpg

Red bands and flat black with silver emitters as planned.

    Skirts are done too.

    9ee94275-9e42-42a0-8243-906ae38c33bb-1_all_45315.jpg

Now for the next phase of the grenade, the torso.

    9ee94275-9e42-42a0-8243-906ae38c33bb-1_all_45314.jpg

Track mounted mechanism raising and lowering the head. Folding panels at the midsection.

    9ee94275-9e42-42a0-8243-906ae38c33bb-1_all_45323.jpg

Some token paint for the visible areas behind the gaps.

    9ee94275-9e42-42a0-8243-906ae38c33bb-1_all_45322.jpg

At this point I attached the rest of the skirts.

    9ee94275-9e42-42a0-8243-906ae38c33bb-1_all_45336.jpg

On the rack and left it for the night.

    9ee94275-9e42-42a0-8243-906ae38c33bb-1_all_45337.jpg

Keeping the flanks pulled down all the way like so, fills out the waistline. Every other review build I've looked at has them folded in for a much tighter look

The best thing you can do here is to disassemble the joint as much as possible, then use extra thin cement to mend the broken half, let sit a full day, and then carefully reassemble. Had something similar happen to one of the sub-arm elbows on Gusion RFC. Dumb-ass joint design there that they cheaped out on.

After doing some minor painting on both copies of the 1/144 Builders Parts System Base 001 I got recently...

    IMG_20240520_091730.jpg

Now that's a proper MS hangar base display! (Using both my custom Violet Blossom Gundam and HGUC Zeta II as examples):

    IMG_20240520_164531.jpg

For each one of these, the base's width can be adjusted to accommodate different MS models in 1/144 scale, the platform angle is adjustable so you can also display these in a reclined "bed" form where it's like the MS itself was undergoing maintenance, you also got some weapons racks that could holds different types of armaments, and multiple copies of the same bases can connect to each other side-by-side (Albeit not as versatile as the most recent 30MM Hangar Base sets that Bandai put out, but looks-wise these looks fantastic).

Due to the somewhat weird high-heeled feet of the Z II, I had to use the wider configuration with the larger footrest option when displaying the Z II on these bases (While the Violet Blossom get by just fine with the narrower configuration, even with the giant radome and beam cannon on its back)
