That really depends on where you're at. Barnes & Noble seems to be the most consistent retailer to carry Gundam in the US, but you may also have local hobby/model shop at your disposal. The days of Gundam at big-box retail was like, 15+ years ago.

Out of the gate I would highly recommend that you look into the High Grade 1/144 Gundam size. They're intended for the casual builder - especially anything from a 'Build' series (Build Fighters, Build Fighters Try, Build Divers), but anything from the last five years should be good.

Yeah, just grabbed a Grimore Red Beret from a B&N near my workplace and that place had some excellent stock. Hobbytown USA also is not a bad bet if you are near one - the one near my workplace (seriously I totally lucked out with location with my job) has a fairly good stock. However, Hobbytown USA is a franchise operation so it varies from store to store about their stock levels I.E. the one I visited in Johnson City, Tenn. was loaded with Build Divers kits and not much else, while the one actually near where I live had a lot of HGUC Gundams and even a few event exclusives, but NO Build Divers kits whatsoever. However, they also carry action bases and other specialty goods you may be interested in - for instance, the rare Gundam Decal waterslides officially produced by Bandai, these things are a PAIN to find if you aren't lucky and most of the time they're only for specific MS designs, making the multi-purpose/generic ones even more valuable.

Make sure you have the tools you’ll need.
They’re not absolutely required but your finished model will be much better.
Essential Tools for Gunpla Building - Gunpla 101

I wished I’d have been better prepared.

.....so many kits, so badly finished.

Anyway, read up on tips, you’ll be happier with your results.

Oh Man, this is bringing flashbacks of my build of wing gundam. I used a little too much Testors enamel thinner
    upload_2018-8-2_7-47-4.png

I did not know some thinners could eat thru the plastic. I'm gonna start doing a gloss coat before doing any panel washing just to be safe. I wound up getting another kit to replace the other pieces and might use the extra shield for when I build the zero RG.

Can't wait to see how yours turns out!

In terms of what I'm currently working on... I just need to do some weathering and I'll be done with the RG RX-78-2 and the HG Leo.

I've tried to avoid any sort of solvent-based washes for panel lining my entire kit-building career, but I don't do a whole lot of painting either. Too much shit that can go wrong. Until recently, I was using thinned enamel I further diluted with distilled water any time I needed to line over a painted area, but then I tried clay washes (Florys) and boy is it so much easier.

I've made a series of clumsy mistakes this week. Capped by "graining" primer. I'm working on the Taisan Starcard 911GT2 again, the car that got destroyed over a year ago when a cat jumped on my shelf above the desk and sent Laplace's Box desk tidy crashing down on top of it. and so I replaced the model for a new car body.

    20180801_182736.jpg

Set myself up to prime it yesterday, but between the moisture in the air (despite being in a closed room, at 75 degrees with a fan running in my spray booth) It looked like the car was a charcoal bricket. So it's soaking in Super Clean and my ultra sonic cleaner is peeling it off.

In the meantime, I used panel accent wash on the undercarriage and engine parts. I forgot this was all enamel paint (even though I thought I brushed on some silver acrylic) so it needs to dry a lot longer than usual.

Everything else about it looks just fine. Tamiya Panel Accent is enamel based so they don't want you applying it too heavily on enamel painted parts because the solvents will eat into the paint.

So it'll be the first real grade to have a larger 1/100 sized box.

    Okay, well now you know!

I see the new promotion pictures they've posted and the shot of Sazabi throwing a punch.. I wonder if a Real Grade Nu Gundam is the December surprise?

Think it'll get a new frame or just be a reuse of the Mk. II again?

Honestly, I think they'll use the Unicorn frame, give it a psychoframe gimmick like the Master Grade ver Ka. OR an entirely new frame.

    In other news, MAIL'S HERE!
    20180802_141140.jpg

The ideas on detailing are starting.

My replacement Wing Gundam EW arrived so I can cannibalize the skeleton parts I need, but I'm also taking the shield, buster rifle, and armor for the bicep. If there's anybody here who needs RG Wing Gundam parts let me know!

all the while, one Porsche, de-primed and ready to priming.. again.

    20180802_135923.jpg

Before anybody asks, YES the mirrors are like that on purpose. I checked the manual, box, and actual car.
