Tonight, Jay Leno hosts The Tonight Show for the last time. Conan O'Brian takes over on Monday. Conan's suppose to be on Leno tonight, probably a passing of the torch thing. Monday is the day all the old folks say "Who the hell is that guy?!"
Is Jay just retiring, or is he going somewhere else? I'll miss him, but I like Conan too so it will be ok.
His contract was up and NBC decided to put him out to pasture and move Conan up. But in order to keep Leno from going over to another network to host another show, NBC made the boneheaded decision to give him a new show Monday through Friday at 10pm/9 central time. They gave up 5 hours of scripted prime time television a week in order to keep him around.
Oh, so he's just gonna be on earlier. I can watch them both now. I haven't seen Conan in a while because I don't stay up that late.
What is Jay's show suppose to be? Is it basically another tonight show? If it is, that's just lame. I assume it's another talk-show-style show where he does his little skits and then interviews people. If it is, I will not be watching.
I've never watched Conan, so I can't comment much on him, other than to say that he can only be an improvement from Leno. I don't understand why Leno deserves another show, since his only funny bit (Headlines) could easily be done by a monkey trained to hold up a different card every 30 seconds.
So glad Leno's sticking around. I've never liked Conan, though I'm intrigued by Jimmy Fallon taking his place.
I don't think this matters all that much for a myriad of reasons. It's not like Leno's going anywhere; he'll just be on at 10:00 now. The late night shows simply aren't as culturally relevent as they used to be.
Never watched Conan, but he was funny in 30 Rock. "I like to surround myself with people who don't try to stab me."
I'm very excited not only for the return of Conan but also for the return of ANDY RICHTER! On one hand I'm a little sad for him that his career didn't work out quite as well as he wanted, but he is still free to do other stuff so it's not like he has to give anything up. It'll just be so great to see him and Conan together regularly again, they have such a great chemistry. And besides, the Tonight Show needs it's Ed McMahon, one of the several things that Leno was sorely lacking. I will miss Joel Goddard though. He was creepy in a good way.
Will Ferrel. I'm curious to see if he'll be bringing back the leprechaun outfit for the Tonight Show. I'm very excited for Monday as I've been waiting for Conan to come back since he left - late night tv just wasn't the same without him. I tried watching Jimmy Fallon's new show, but I couldn't make it through an episode - his show is painfully bad. Craig Ferguson has turned out to be a lot of fun, but as much as I like it he's really no substitute for Conan. I do think it's incredibly stupid for NBC to waste an hour of primetime every night on Leno. I know their schedule is mostly crap these days, but it still seems like a bad move (although it's hard to expect much from a network that airs four episodes of Deal or No Deal every week and regular three-hour installments of The Biggest Loser). At least they aren't going back on the Tonight Show changeover, though, like how they screwed over Letterman back in the 90s.
I didn't mind Fallon on SNL, so I gave his Late Night show three tries. The first episode was unbearable and I couldn't finish it. The second one I watched a few weeks later and it reminded me a bit of Carson Daly's show, which isn't a compliment. The third time I tried watching, a few weeks ago, was so boring, unfunny and witless that it made me a little sad. I don't wish Fallon failure, but I know I will never watch his show again because it's just not for me. I like Craig Ferguson (have since he was on Drew Carey Show) but I agree that he's no substitute for Conan.
If Andy is returning with Conan, then I definitely will be watching, Regardless, very shitty of NBC to just give Leno a show right before Conan EVERY night. I can understand the decision, but it makes Conan's big move up rather pointless IMO.
Thiiiiis. I can't wait to see if Andy and Conan will still have they did back then. I mean, come on, naked Andy being pushed into a filming of the Today Show was hilarious. "Is Katie around...?" And I'm so sad Joel won't be there. He really brought the lulz. But yeah, I love Conan, and I hope he does well. I dunno how he'll hold up with the older Leno crowd, though.
Yeah, that's my concern as well. I love Conan, think he's the funniest of all the late night talk show peeps, but I'm not sure his brand of humor will click with the older crowd. Then again, I'm probably worrying over nothing because I'm sure he'll get decent enough rating with his Late Night audience watching on top of most of the normal Tonight Show audience.
I just hope his solid fanbase supports him and keeps watching, he really does need it the most right now. It seems a lot of older people don't "get" Conan, but hopefully they'll warm up to him. Or they'll be all scared of change or something
I thought that was pretty awesome when they did that during the Writer's Strike. Looking forward to see Andy back with Conan.
