If I were to guess, I'd say they might not have finalized their plan for minicons moving forward by that point. Bulkhead was wave 1 while Starscream and Metroplex were much later, and we know Metro was designed with Drill Bit in mind.

Or it might've just been a cost cutting coincidental hollow peg, who knows

Most likely a left over from a point in time they were planning original Mini-con usage, like how SS86 Hotrod had 5mm ports sprinkled over him from when he was supposed to be part of the third part of the WFC trilogy.

I'd be really annoyed if it turns out the 2 Core Class Energon monsters that were cancelled and replaced with the Pretenders turns out to be Minicons that turned into weapons to fuel in the Energon weapon theme they had going for the first year of Legacy. Doubt there's any papers or blueprints showing what those Energon monsters would've looked like.

Well, I preordered Armada Prime on Gamestop, and with my Platinum card, I save money in the end. Had I went with another retailer, I would have had to pay shipping, exchange rate, and duty/import charges on top of the retail price, so huge savings for me, yay!

    Behind the scenes from Mark:

Mark Maher on Instagram: "Here he is, Commander Armada Prime is ready to grace your shelf with nothing but pure power! . When I kicked this character off to TT, I actually sent over the Wondercon Takara Tomy prototype image that was shown at that event. They explained to me that the grey model their domestic team showed off did not have the super mode combining ability. The amazing Hasui san took the bull by the horns and just went wild! . The Armada style was always super interesting to me, I didn’t view the series until after I played with some of the toys. I actually never got my hands on this og toy, but watching the show, the ting in Primes voice really struck a cord with me. I feel like the series didn’t really hit me hard until I got to work with @archermonster_creative inside the halls of Hasbro. . The bulky tires, the powerlifter build, the design and great heroic features he displays makes me want to play with this toy for hours. This figure demands a respect whether you dig Armada or not, he is just such a perfect addition to the Legacy multiverse. . Highlight reel: dark blue op on the faces to differentiate from the helmet adds extra depth and details, silver 5 mm smokestack blasters, sculpted decoed autobot badge, clear matrix, supermode transformation feels so good, ratcheted leg and shoulder joints, articulated ab crunch…I’ll stop there . Feels good to be apart of Transformers right now and just you wait, more insanity on the way!"

Huh, so that prototype could not actually do a super-mode configuration.

Looking at the grayscale proto from years ago, I have to wonder what part of "does not combine" was accurate.

There are seams and segmentation/design elements that make absolutely no sense unless the intent is to transform for Super Mode. Perhaps they never integrated that functionality and some torso design elements lacked the necessary integration components, but some level of that grayscale prototype incorporated the design intent of Super Mode.

Maybe they also meant that no trailer had been designed and/or trailer/combination design had been sacrificed for the final appearance?

But nothing about the engineering of the prototype warrants the split seam in the pelvis. Using the Armada "non-combining" version as a reference, it doesn't make sense.

It's more than likely just a proof of concept. They included the seam because the seam would be on there in a realized version. I bet half of that toy didn't move at all, as magnificent as it looked.

I thought we already knew it wasn't an actual functioning figure

It's easy to say that in retropect. This is beyond being a functioning figure, this was something they had no intention of making either then showing off they could make and to possibly raise interest. Alot of People thought their was atleast a steel mold for a functional verison of the toy out there, gathering dust. Not even that existed. That resin copy is all that will ever exist for this ealier verison of legacy armada OP.

I loved the prototype, but I have never seen something that early along in the process that actually functioned fully. I am sure parts did, but we have to consider that if there was more to show, they probably would have shown it.

This all being said, it was pretty far along in the design phase. I bet there were drafts made for the rest of prime's components. Just no physical combining model.

I'd be ecstatic if they made It but I don't see the insanity in this figure, it would be a pretty basic deluxe, some have even speculated it as a remold...
