To be honest, I’ve never liked mutant heads, even right from the get go. One of the appealing parts of the first wave of Beast Wars toys for me was the clear distinction between organic and mechanical parts, and mutant heads muddied that. So when they announced Kingdom Mutant Head Tigatron, my first reaction was “what a waste of a beautiful mold and deco on a shitty head”. Anyway, inspiration struck while I was playing around with the Kingdom Commander Rodimus Prime. If Rodimus were a Beastie, what sort of Beastie would he be? An oversized orange tiger seemed to be a really good fit for the character. So off I went. The major work was done to the head of course. Prying off the mutant mask and throwing it away, I sanded down the pegs and eye stalks, and attached the front part of the Kingdom Commander's head to it. While it was still roughly the same size as the regular Tigatron's head, for some reason it just looked TOO big. I ended up decapitating a POTP Rodimus instead, and that seemed to do the trick. I wanted to keep the continuity of the organic parts in beast mode in without the robot head being visible on the neck, so I needed to integrate the rear of the orange head part in. I also colour matched the weird off-white of the original figure (flat white, with a drop of brown, a drop of green and a bit of yellow). Added a few red accents and swivel the cat legs into a type of spoiler, and voila. It's not perfect by any means - if there were some way of swapping out the blue cyan parts with red I think it would resonate a lot more, but it's serviceable and functional with minimum paint wear or parts falling off issues, which was my goal.
I agree 100%, however my goal when I do customs is for them to playable. Painting over the greenish/blue parts would make it a mess the first time I transform it. This is as far as I can go with this mold. Even if I could recast those parts into red plastic, they're all bolted in, not screwed, so I would screwed (ha) trying to swap them out.
funny that you replaced his mutant head, while i needed a mutant head for a regular tigatron, i said NEEDED, because now im just buying the repaint and not the white tigatron , also, that looks good but he need more red...maybe some yellow?
Yea. If only Hasbro would offer a Generation Selects Hot Rod / Rodimus like this cast in a darker orange for the body and the teal replaced with red. I, for one, would be an extremely happy camper.
Excellent work. Funny you mention about the first head being too big as I feel the same way about the head on the white Tigatron. Not a fan of mutant heads though I could accept them on modern Pretenders like Iguanus where the Pretender head is a helmet. I've been extremely disappointed to see Iguanus having his shell as his robot mode. I do wonder how the Rodimus Prime Titanmaster would look. It's always puzzled me why Hasbro never repainted a Cheetor or Tigatron figure as Prowl, Smokescreen or Bluestreak or indeed made a Beast Wars Bumblebee from some version of Waspinator especially given they've shoved Bumblebee down our throats for the last 15 years. Actually I'd love a Catilla repaint of Tigatron. As Rodimus Prime fan, I love what you've done here.
cool idea! I think certain parts should be different colors if you're gonna repaint. Shoulders maroon, thigh plates orange/yellow. Crotch plate maroon.
Yeah I hear everyone about the need for more yellow/red on the figure to really give him that Rodimus look. Again, my inspiration was from the original Optimus Primal toy, which, apart from the head, had very little in terms of coloring that reflected Optimus Prime. If I could figure out some way to dye the blue plastic red so that it can hold up to handling and transformation, then i'll definitely do it.
If you want to maintain playability, rit dye is the way to go. You just need to make sure the parts with the sam colors sit in the dye for tbe same amount of time and that you don't over heat your pieces. Starting with a white tigatron would work better
Ohhh i'd never considered that before. Thank you. If I could disassemble the figure easily i'll give it a go, but like I said they went with bolts for everything instead of screws. Tigatron's pieces are also the same blue so I don't think it matters which I use.
Hmm, now I'm wondering what it would look like if the insides of the front legs were painted yellow...
