I noticed from pics before I got this nifty little booger that painting him to show accurate bot mode colors would make ratty mode look worse, so I decided to just do my own thing with the goal being a good mix of improving both modes. I'll leave extreme show accuracy to the Masterpiece line. I cut off the pegs that his bot shoulders go into for rat mode since they weren't really necessary anyway, filled in lots of ugly slots and holes with apoxie sculpt, sculpted some rat fur on his bot leg sides so no real obvious bot mode stuff shows in rat mode anymore, cut off those absurd looking long rear rat foot toes (he still stands just fine), and painted him up like this.
I’m so glad you’re still managing to do customs. A fantastic job! Just goes to show how accurate Kingdom Rattrap’s sculpt isn’t, you make him look like he walked right off the show!
Having previously owned a rattus norvegicus or Fancy Rat, if you will - the anatomical discrepancies in the alt mode kill this figure for me. That said - this is a stellar job & your colors look better than factory, so amazing work.
I've had many pet rats myself. In fact, the last of my 3 boys (Rattrap Rumble and Frenzy- 2 dumbos and a fancy) died a few months back at just over 3 years old. One of the things I like best about this figure is how well it actually captures the look of a real New York street rat, which is more what Rattrap should be than a pet fancy rat. Street/sewer rats are a different breed from the pets you and I have. They usually only live for maybe one year and adults are often a bit more hunched over and lumpy looking due to malnourishment. Rattrap in the Beast Wars show didn't look much like a rat, and the Thrilling 30 Rattrap looked more like a psycho mouse with monster teeth than a rat. This one, despite being a much smaller figure, has a more rat-like shape, and even has the huge freakin balls under his tail in the form of the bot fists. Sure, it's far from perfect still. His rat head is a little small and feet are too big for bot mode reasons, and there is that wacky rear foot toe thing... But I think it's probably the closest thing we've had to a rat transformer, especially if you chop off those dumb back foot toes.
I had a little fat rat once and I still like this toy. I can see where the “anatomically correct” rat ends and the “typical compromises for the sake of a robot mode tucked in there” begin. I think Kingdom Rattrap looks better for a Legends than the T30 one did for a deluxe, rat-wise. Especially that God-awful face they gave it. Thats the best news of the year! (I know it just started but ah you know what I mean )
I will never be able to look a Rattrap the same way again knowing he punches Waspinator with his testicles.
Balls of Steel! My rats only survived a year themselves (my pet stores only sold feeders as pets) & I agree about the "psycho-mouse", so fine - you talked me into it; I just need to find one. Since you're a fellow rat lover...
Haha, yep I've seen that one. If I can find a good breeder, my wife said she'd drive hours if need be next time we are ready to get more rats. I rescued my last 3 boys from a feeder place too. 2 of them died from the usual tumors that too often get them in old age, which I hear is less common if you buy from a good licensed breeder. I'm not up for seeing that happen to another little buddy any time soon. Bad enough their life span is so short. Last pics I took of my bro Rattrap. He's probably a disgusting rat to a lot of folks, but I thought he was pretty adorable.
Man I didnt know how much paint he was missing, you made him look soo much better, also awesome to hear you recovered and are cancer free!!!!!
