http://kotaku.com/362913/holy-crap-king-of-fighters-xii-is-100-percent-hand-drawn The trailer is quite nice looking. If everything is completely hand drawn (and hopefully in full HD), then it's going to look super sweet. I've lost touch with the KoF series in the last 10 years or so, but if the game is as silky smooth as the trailer implies, I might have to check it out.
I was never really an SNK afficianado, but haven't most of the memorable characters from each of the series' already made appearances in the KoF games? From a pure gameplay standpoint, I'm sure KoF has eclipsed them all in terms of what has been offered.
So we've gone from hand-drawn animation to rotoscoping, to cgi, to cell-shaded cgi, and then to rotoscoped cell-shaded cgi in an attempt to capture the look of hand-drawn animation.
From my understanding, it is all actually hand drawn. If that is the case, that sort of flies in the face of Capcom's statement that they had pushed hand drawn sprites as far as they could with Street Fighter III.
That's what I get for not verifying my info. LOL Why do people at work bother me when I am trying to read Kotaku?
Yes, these sprites are rotoscoped cell-shaded cgi. That is exactly what they are. Rotoscoping means drawing over or otherwise incorporating a film or video element with animation. It was the original motion-capture technique.
Looks good, but I haven't been much of a SNK fan since Playmore bought them. I would like to see a Metal Slug game done like this though.
if Mature and Vice aren't in it, I'm not interested I AM glad that they aren't succumbing to the siren call of 3d, though.
