if they killed Ratchet, noone would of been that upset about it and that would of taken away the whole purpose. The writers knew killing Ironhide would upset fans and thus the fans would hate Sentinel Prime and know he means business.

Yep, although I'd be pretty upset about Ratchet too.

Exactly why I think it was a good decision, by killing Ironhide, they kick in the teeth not only the Autobots, but the audience as well, its probably the only occasion where the audience truly feels the loss.

And it cemented Sentinel's status as a villain pretty well.

Besides, killing Ratchet would be a tad unfair: The guy gets the lesser amount of screen-time from all of the "original-team 'Bots" [i.e Optimus, Ironhide, Ratchet and 'Bee], never heals anyone, never killed any named character, and then gets killed off? God's sake, man, give the dude a break!

Ironhide was beloved by both the fandom and the audience, well-developed [the secondary character with the greater amount of screen-time, as 'Bee and Optimus are the lead characters], was a strong character and we saw a considerable amount of stuff from him, kill him off is fair, I think.

^The point here is about the audience, and the audience doesn't give a flying duck to the non-badass characters [except for the "non-badass and funny ones", like Wheelie and Brains], Ratchet among them.

Ratchet's death would probably make me sad, unlike Ironhide's.

Sentinel Prime killing Bumblebee would've been bold.

I wish they did that. The emotional toll it causes Sam to have would of been a great motivation for him.

This, so much this. Killing off Ironhide really raised the stakes for the movie. He was a great character across the entire trilogy. I don't think I would have felt that way about Ratchet, even as a TF fan. It was the right direction to go in.

I agree. Killing Bumblebee would be great though, and then be reformatted into Goldbug!! Just a golden version of the previous Bumblebee. But Ironhide was still good, I was sad, but not "Boo hoo, my life is over and my Ironhide is dead and a pile of rust".

This makes me realize why the writers decided to have Jazz killed in the first movie. At least one Autobot had to die, otherwise the film's villains couldn't be taken seriously enough. And, when you compare Jazz to the rest of the bots, he's probably in the middle in terms of how liked he was by the fans; you don't want to kill off an Autobot that people like too much or they'll just be disappointed, but you don't want to kill off an Autobot that everyone likes the least, or the death will have been a waste.

I would of liked if Bee died, and instead Ironhide lived. Only in order for Ironhide in the final battle to be redeemed, have a badass moment, and say "Punk ass decepticons, this one is for bee!." and then he just goes ape shit on all the decepticons, blasting them with his cannons, taking them out brutally one by one. In my opinion, towards the audience that would of been a MAJOR hero moment and a great feeling for the audience knowing Bee's death was avenged in the most appropriate way.
But of course Bay and co. couldn't come up with something like that.
I would of found it much more emotional than what we have.
