You know what? Some of the NOES kids weren't dumb. It makes sense for some of the kids to die in each movie, because who the hell expects that kinda shit? And they hadn't introduced lucid dreaming yet, but they DID try and put up a fight once they realized what they could do. Plus ignoring him is less likely to stir him up and weakens him. I'm pretty sure it's not all about dumb people either. Most people don't expect to get murdered by a psychopath when they're partying, or camping, or even spending a quiet evening at home, and most of the population ain't exactly Rambo.
