99.99999% of all social sites are crap. But they're not crap because they turn their users into crappy people. They're crap because crappy people are attracted to and use them.

Stupid crap doesn't create stupid people. It attracts them like a watering hole. Then outside observers come in and misinterpret what they're seeing.

I'm not saying everyone who uses a social site is a crappy person. Just most people.

Christ, when I was twelve the internet was something that was only 10,000 pages strong and Tim Berners-Lee has just founded the WC3.

I wish I had it back then, homework would have been so much easier.

Exactly my point. Homework isn't supposed to be easy, that's why it's called "work." The problem (and blessing (don't get me wrong)) now, is that everything is at your fingertips. Even I have been tempted to use Wikipedia as a source when writing college papers. I instead, use it as a tool and go to the pages and publications used as reference on Wikipedia and do my own research. It still is a lot easier, but you can still get a good education from it instead of a quick answer if it's used properly...which children (and many adults) don't have the self-discipline for.

    Some people say alcohol's a drug. It's not a drug, it's a drink.

Wait - there's porn on the internet?

All this time I've been doing the internet wrong.

And computers should be designed so that they can detect the microchip inplanted in a person's brain at birth and if that person is too young for the content they're veiwing the computer is turned off. And the child gets an electric shock through the chip as punishment.

if parents did actual parenting kids would be much safer on the net and on the subject of homework on-line research can be useful but i believe kids should also have to go to the library and research the old fashioned way as well

The problem with kids and the internet is that the learning and information stuff parents would like their kids to take advantage of is mixed up with the less than useful or appropriate stuff parents would like to avoid their kids having exposure to.
Sure there are settings a parent can use to limit things but a clever and determined kid can get around those or just use a computer elsewhere that doesn't have those restrictions.

As far as research goes, libraries are obsolete. At least any that I have been to in the last 10 years. To get books, libraries are awesome. For research, no. It would be like making a kid get water down at the local stream instead of using the tap. Sure you can get water there, but the quality isn't there.
