Okay so I just watched 2001: A Space Odyssey for the 1st time in my entire life. Since the 80's I've always seen this film in video stores and have had it cross my path a few times whenever someone on the internet was casually mentioning it but I didnt have any interest in watching it at all (despite being a major sci-fi fan)

Holy damn. This movie is awesome. Theres so much epic "how-the-hell did they do that back then" in this movie. I think its probably gone straight into my top 5 best sci-fi movies.

I usually find myself easily desensitized to movies with older special effects based on modern standards, but I didnt feel that at all watching this. Even the concepts of the events that take place in the movie, they're so far ahead of its time.

    Masterpiece.

Some films are not for everyone. 2001 is sort of like a modern art painting, you have to make your own interpretation since the maker won't give away a thing.

An allegory on humanity, a quest into space and the unknown, a horror story about a sentient robot... it's many different things, all wrapped up in a mystery. That's part of its charm and appeal, the mystery.

It had some groundbreaking visuals for sure, I'll give it that. And the futuristic tech was quite well-developed for its time.

The mystery about the unknown alien race that made the monoliths is one of the greatest in fiction that doesn't even need to be solved.

There's so much to see and think about. It's a beautiful film that can be interpreted as a million different things.

Haven't seen it in a while, definitely need to again.

Try the books, they are wonderful, although I think the 2010 book is actually a sequal to the 2001 film and the 2061 book is the sequal to the 2010 film I think (good but no way as ground braking as 2001). The 3001 book seemed to miss some bits from 2061 though.

Eh, the story is ok to me, and it was great effects for the time, but all the silence kills it for me. Although the music is very well done.

    The book is better :p

Nah I'm joking I loved EVEYRTHING Kubrick ever done and this one is no exception!

(but seriously read the books, Clarke isn't one of the greatest SF writers of all time for nothing)

Understatement. If you liked the plot of 2k1, your mind is going to lose it when you watch the sequel: 2010 - The Year We Make Contact.

It's definitely a good movie but too many scenes that make you scratch your head a little. The deafening silence in some of the scenes don't help.

I love it up until the last 20 minutes or so. Be sure to watch the sequel too. It's not groundbreaking like the original, but still a decent movie in its own right.

Let me guess, you found it boring?

Really? I think The Shining's a way better movie than 2001.

Fantastic movie and memorable score. Loved the trippy ending. :lol
Still find this movie better than say, Gravity.

One of the reasons, yes. All it is shiny special fx with the only good character being a computer, and a second act that was just shoehorned in. It's just a series of images, a mansion and a weird baby thing that can somehow magically breath in space. Kubrick was like "fuck the aliens, we can't make 'em so let's mind rape the audience and make the second act look like it has meaning by inserting random images of the universe that has nothing to do with what came before." Then all the people go to it to watch the "pretty effects" and see what the last act looks like while high. Please, it's just amusing for the "revolutionary sfx" which are now out-dated. If I wanted to see a guy stare at a black rectangle for 20 minutes like he's never seen one before then I'd watch a 1980 cereal commercial.

Why do you think the second act was "just shoehorned in"?

Also, if you're going to denigrate a film because the special-effects it used have since been surpassed, do you go to art galleries and pshaw at the paintings because now you could just take a photo on your phone that looks more like the real thing?
