That’s pretty beautiful isn’t it? The MP-12 Lambor/Sideswipe mould in black. Because everything looks good in black, Masterpiece Optimus Prime, Soundwave, Rodimus and now Sideswipe. I’ve now seen all of those black repaints in the flesh and my opinion is that they are beautiful, but whether they are worthy of the extra spend is a matter of how relevant the repaint is to the collector. Arguably, MP-12G Lambor G2 Version (G2 Sideswipe) has the most character to him, something that the execution of this toy taps into deeply. But, is it enough for this to just be as pretty as a black Lamborghini Countach was always going to be? Is there anything else there under the surface? Maz, your articles and source blogs are supreme. Why do I say this? Because I feel the need to own every figure you write up. I know going in I have no intention of obtaining certain figures you review, but I come out with a desire to have it in my collection. Great job as usual!

Great article again Maz... I always look forward to reading them. Having no affiliation to any one line I find myself buying more black repaints that perhaps other people would do. I like stuff in black. It just looks better to my eyes Thinking about it - it must be the black/red combination that does it for me. Just like MP G2 Sideswipe, when a black a red repaint is released with red highlights here and there, I find myself unable to resist. This black Soundblaster type thing from TFA is so much nicer than the Soundwave version. Transformers Animated Soundblaster Rocking Out And don't get me started on how cool this TFA Prime is in black. Just look at those red eyes - amazing. Transformers Animated Black Optimus Prime Sadly because I joined this party rather late on, I am missing lots of older cool black repaints. That's ok though because I am sure more will be released as time goes by.
I passed on MP Tigertrack and even on MP Red Alert, but there was no way I'd be passing on G2 Sideswipe. Such a perfect tribute. I received him around the same time I received MP Soundblaster & Ratbat, but to be honest, while I'd expected me to be wowed by Soundblaster, I ended up being slightly disappointed with him and Ratbat, while G2 Sideswipe turned out to be even better than I'd expected (helped by a significantly better paintjob than MP-12). I hope your little adventure into direct importing from Japan was also to your liking! The price difference is too attractive to ignore, as far as I'm concerned, and it's a great way to keep these MP's somewhat affordable!
great article as always, Maz! Black repaints have their appeal in this collecting hobby. Especially if it invokes good memories of those earlier black paint job-inspired Diaclone toys.
Great stuff, Maz! G2 Sideswipe is probably one of my favorite toys of all time. As a kid, my 'Swipe always at the front of every battle. The tip of the spear. Now, I have two sealed G2 Sideswipes (first run and second run varieties), as well as 2 loose. I ended up preordering THREE MP-12G's, and I have no regrets.
Man, I feel massive justification after basically pleading with you repeatedly to open this guy and tool him up. Now you understand. Oh and sort out a bandolier for this guy. It totally ices the cake.
My collection criteria is official MPs of on-screen G1 characters only, so I was really happy that with SoundBlaster I got to dip my toes in the black repaint pool. Can't wait for MP-11 Skywarp and MP Insecticons, some of my favorite figures from my childhood, much of it having to do with their black decos.
This is the only version of Sideswipe I have! He's always been a minor character, but the G2 comic was him at his most memorable. Plus there are G2 Classics Inferno and Jazz to hang out with him. Though in my collection he'll always be screaming at Fansproject Assaulter to "lighten up!"
