I didn't see a thread about this yet, so I thought I should start one. Has anyone else here read Johnny the Homicidal Maniac? What are your thoughts on it? JTHM is probably one of my favorite comic series of all time (obviously, based on the second half of my username. lol). What about any other comics by Jhonen Vasquez? Squee? I Feel Sick? Fillerbunny?
I've read JTHM and own Squee and was also a big fan of Invader Zim. I think what attracted me to Vasquez's work in those is a very conscious and deliberate rejection of easy accessibility without quite falling into the trap of violence/gore/grossness for its own sake. Vasquez thinks up, writes, and draws some delightfully warped, vicious, and twisted stuff. But underneath it all, he's actually trying (just a little) to actually say something about the society he lives in. There are consistent themes in his work, if you look hard enough. Ignorance, uninvolved parenting, the cruelty of children, social isolation, mediocrity, some sort of...bizarre dislike for food and eating, and of course, bees. There, that should help gets things rolling. Discuss. - Coeloptera
I was introduced to J.V.'s work through Invader Zim (where I got my username). I have since kept my open and picked up his comic works. I love his stuff. My favorite strip in JTHM is the one where he has a guy in his house (you just know he is done for), and Johnny has him taste all the food in his fridge to see if it is spoiled then lets him go.
i read squee and most of jthm and loved them, i feel sick i never finished all of and of course zim love fillerbunny ha though i never liked noodle boy
