I had a second Netflix Deep Cover for reasons I don't feel like whining about, and tried to strip the paint off it. A gunmetal Sideswipe? Oh HELL yeah, let's get it on!!

This was as far as I got with some melamine sponges. SCREW. THAT.
I ended up just ordering some overly expensive 99.8% isopropyl alcohol [FORESHADOWING] and got to work.
    IMG_20210828_114036281.jpg
Oh yeah, NOW we're talking. The paint was coming off a lot easier, and then... disaster struck. I wasn't paying attention to the clear plastic and was rubbing it vigorously (stop snickering) with a serviette soaked in isopropyl, and the clear plastic shattered around the hinges. FUCK.
Soooo... I said "fuck it", glued it back together, sanded the cracks to the best of my ability and just painted over the rest, doing something totally different.

First pass with the varnish. Not too evenftul.
    IMG_20210828_182824394.jpg
    And finished after some tweaks!

I really like the edge lining I did here, gives it a very TRON Legacy look.
So then. If I end up getting a THIRD Deep Cover to make a Gunmetal Sideswipe (or a Sparkless to turn into Bluestreak), what solvent should I use that won't murder the poor clear plastic?

I was just working on my blue deep cover last night. I used 91% rubbing alcohol to take off the windshield streaks. Just be careful and it’ll come off ok.

Ah, so should I dilute my alcohol a bit then? 91% is borderline impossible to find in Australia. Hell, this stuff was hard enough to find. Had to get it from an electronics supply shop.

In the US, 91% can be picked up anywhere. They seem to stock 50, 70, & 91% most places. Department stores, pharmacies, hardware stores etc

How destructive to clear plastic is 70%? That's the most common kind around here, and I'd rather avoid shattering one of these unnecessarily.

I used 91% and STILL couldn't get the streaks off the windshield. Tried lightly sanding them off with very fine grit paper - that didn't help. I'm going to just paint over the windshield now.

As for the rest of the paint, I let the pieces soak in a mason jar of 91% alcohol for a few hours (the autobot symbol floated off in one piece), and was able to scrub it off with a combination of cotton balls and swabs. It didn't get every nook and cranny, but I'm not going for the gun metal 'swipe.

70 isn't strong enough to remove the paint. For the most part, 91% is good for a decent soak. The clear parts get tricky though, it gets cloudy and sometimes brittle. Still, it's the best option available

Oddly, I've gotten lucky with 70% recently, although it did take some soaking. Removed most of the red panel on Siege Red Alert (just the recesses held on to some of it) and the Autobot logo and surprisingly a layer of red on Sideswipe (they painted a more matte red OVER the red plastic). Never tried it on clear plastic because I vaguely recall it can be destructive.

I like the scratches on Deep Cover's windshield, as they make him a bit more unique amidst the gaggle of redecos. But by the same token they have to go so I can customize him into someone else. To play it safe, I may have to just paint over them...

I don't know about Deep Cover's windshield scratches, but I got Netflix Red Alert's windshield "cracks" off with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and some elbow grease.

Yeah, I was going to use a melamine sponge/magic eraser for the whole thing but used the alcohol like an idiot. :v
I'll stick to the sponge when I deal with clear plastic then.

Same with Netflix Sideswipe and Netflix Red Alert, I believe. Just be careful with that clear plastic!

    Am I an idiot?

    Yes.
Didn't remove all of the paint because I couldn't. Bluh.
