Every time I see the Omni dub pop up on YouTube, it gets taken down shortly after. I see these have been up for 2 months. I guess we’ll see how long it lasts this time.
The universe didn't break when Go Lion became Voltron, or when Super Dimensional Fortress Macross became Robotech. It also didn't make the stories untenable in the process. Dubs are perfectly fine.
I've seen subbed episodes up on youtube for long stretches of time. But for whatever reason, the Omni dubs don't stay up long. But maybe things will be different this time and I'll have to eat my words.
Those are both a lot more than dubs. They're rewrites. And whatever feelings you might have stemming from your own childhood experiences, the rewrites were not an improvement or even a lateral move. They lessened the material. The only debate to be held is to what degree.
We can agree to disagree there. I've seen what Macross was before Robotech, and it was a marked improvement. The only thing that DIDN'T improve was Southern Cross, but I don't think anything would have improved that.
Removing the show's central theme was an improvement? It's your choice to not like the original show, but dumbing something down merely to make it easier to integrate with two other unrelated series is a weird thing to champion. In any case, I'm never in favor of the What's Up, Tiger Lily thing. Not even in the case of What's Up, Tiger Lily.
WOW. I guess there's no accounting for taste. You misspelled "shit". Hardly any Ro-Beasts (mostly Voltron fighting starships and fighters, how pointless), poor mecha design, way too much dopey comedy, and the worst music. Ugh! Actually, I take it back. It wasn't shit. But it was not what I'd call "good." I started out liking it, but after about a dozen episodes I realized it's basically just fodder for slash fiction.
I would say that Robotech and Voltron aren't even just rewrites. They are more like, stock footage used to make entirely different shows. Like that one that Spoony and Sage reviewed years ago. It was like either Diatron 5, or Garzey's Wing, I think. (Maybe it was something else, I forget.) Where they took a bunch of footage from multiple shows and just chopped it together. While I still very much will say I enjoy dubs, it is shows like Robotech and Voltron (regardless of how much I love them.) That remind me on how important it is for us to not to try to "improve" these shows. Shows like Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Pokemon, and Card Captor Sakura have all been chopped up to pieces by people who have tried to "improve" these shows. Dubs are fine, but they need to leave the animation and story in tact as it was. Not how it should or was "meant" to be. Regardless of how much it would improve the story. Because we've seen where this leads before. So whenever you guys think "improvements" need to be made to these shows, just remember, Purple Mr. Popo. People who try to fix things, just end up making things worse. So, let's not do that anymore. I know I certainly won't support it anymore. Not with any form of money. No more. People have proven that nobody can do it without making things worse.
However, there will ALWAYS be something that will need "fixing" because of the culture divide. Age inappropriate relationships IMMEDIATELY come to mind.
If you need to 'fix' them in order to make it appropriate for western audiences, then maybe, just maybe, it is best not to bring them over to begin with.
SDF Macross is infinitely better than Robotech. TBH though Robotech is what got me into the Macross franchise. Macross Plus is still one of the best anime movies I've ever seen.
