    The True Believers Comic Awards

The True Believers Awards are being organised by Mike and Cassandra Conroy, a father and daughter team who previous ran the prestigious Eagle Awards. The True Believers Awards have come from a desire to create a more up to date and relevant awards show for the 21st century - so it is a tremendous honour for IDW and Transformers to be nominated for these awards.

    Excellent! :)

The team working on MTMTE really deserves it. What an honor, It's very nice that a Transformers comic is even being "nominated", it'd blow me away if it actually got the award, but I think they deserve it.

James roberts has become one of my favorite author's, and I hope he sticks with Transformers for awhile. He's inspired me, too. This is very good news. ^_^

Hey good on them. James deserves it, his writing has Inspired a cult like following of true believers so it seems very appropriate. Definitely would be nice to see a writer, editor, or the entire publisher be formally recognized for their efforts these last years.

The following is in counter point to the gushing.. so if a less than 100% positive attitude to IDW offends you then please skip this post.

James Roberts has one firm thing going for him he's marginally less worse than some of the other IDW writers. Funny only the other day I heard more than one person begging for some better writers to come into the comic industry - but with such infinitesimal sales and no doubt tiny pay to match the best reason to do it I guess is to get you a name enough to secure a writing Gig for TV and get paid slightly more. Otherwise you might as well get a job in accounting.

I still don't much like IDW period though for the same reason what they write is incompatible with my understanding of What Transformers 'is' supposed to be about, and so many oddball quirks is to me distracting. I'm sure some decent Transformers comics will be written again one day but it's doubtful it will sell any more than the hysterically tiny numbers it does at the moment so long as it's more interested in being "cute" than telling a good story or being true to the spirit of the franchise and the characters.

I don't Blame Roberts though as I've come to the conclusion that Simon Furman is a truly appalling writer too much of the time But it does fill me with a mixture of amusement and melancholy to see people extolling the virtues of a Death Happy Hack like Furman or someone who writes the same fanfic he did 10 years ago and now simply tries to pass it off as mainline product in the hope no one will notice - nope it's still the same fanfic... and it's still not my understanding of Transformers 'It's his personal vision' (though some seem to like it); It's odd That he made no attempt at all to make his content more G1 like or that hasbro don't even seem to mind that he's writing a comic that has nothing to do with anything G1 ; this is frankly to me down right bizarre as much as it is that the few thousand people who buy the stuff don't seem to care either. I can only put it down to a very hands off attitude that seems to also have resulted in the likes of The Movie Universe or Kiss Players having the name Transformers applied to it too. Or even that Transformers Animated got commissioned at all.

I do have to wonder how lacking the writing has to be in the rest of the comic industry that anything made by IDW could win some sort of award... even an inconsequential one, as if you asked me what is the worst comics i'd ever read out of the Thousands I own - I'd say most of the top 10 would be by IDW (and no not Just Transformers. I can say they are coming close to making the Dreamwave G1 ongoing and mini-series look acceptable and that was beyond terrible. As for Mr Robert's maybe he can get another job where he can do what he enjoys doing so much - inventing universes - I just hope it's not one that then gets someone else's Brand name attached to it next time.

Now this could get the comics a bit more exposure if it hasn't already.

By fear of falling victim to the hounds, I'm just going to say James is really talented writer, and although he often dips his toes too far into "The Deep End" of his fanfiction when writing MTMTE, they both deserve it.

    "Fan fiction?"

I always hear people say that, but it never makes any sense. I'd like to know what constitute's "fan-fiction." Is it natural casual dialogue? Original concepts?

Anyhow, I was going to vote, but they ask for your email address. Goddamn, like my inbox needs anymore junk.

Y'all say "fan fiction" like it's a bad thing or something to be embarrassed about... it's not, just saying.

There's not liking something, then there's that, chill man. MTMTE isn't your thing? That's fine, I can absolutely see why it might not appeal to some folks, I just don't get feeling that strongly about it.
When I started reading Transformers comics just before MTMTE started it sure as hell wasn't what I expected from Transformers, but I loved it.
Different strokes for different folks and all that.

As for the nominations, as far as I'm concerned very well deserved!

Agreed. It seems to carry a certain stigma due to being associated with "low quality", sadly, but if you look around there's good fan-fiction to be found. Check out the 'Out of the Dead Land' photo-comic elsewhere on this site for how good it can be.

I know there is always going to be people that get offended when someone has the opposite oinion to their cherished held beliefs in this case that would be me then.

Which is why I think it's best for some of the more gushing individuals to skip my posts for the sake of their blood pressure.

I once made a list of things of what is wrong with IDW Transformers comics I got bored at #29 though as I didn't really want to get past 60 that would have been just to depressing indeed.

The short version is He writes the same stuff now he wrote when he did Fanfiction it even has many of the same characters he "invented" in the comics as it did in the fanfiction so yep it's Fanfiction with pictures. (think of that as a good thing or a bad thing as you will but it's still a valid observation that he write the same things in pretty much the same way - if you happen to like it then I can suggest you go read the fanfiction too then.

The longer version would be a observation that comic sales are terrible and that nothing anyone does is going to change that and that I don't think the current comics are seen as "an event" they are a little side story a little cute cottage industry that has about as much brand relevence as a Lady Bird book or a TV Magazine Manga.

I happen to think they should be more than that they brand deserves more than selling 10,000 copies a month. It is my belief that IDW can't provide the push to do that and it's time for a change - I don't even object to the like of Furman or Roberts writing for another publisher - so long as they are rained in from their off topic excesses and inapropriate ideas about robot gender and sexuality Character accuracy and the levels violence. Also it might be nice for once to Have a Transformers comic with involved more than characters standing around talking.

What is done is fine for Fanfic it's not fine for a license product though in my view... so for that reason No - I wouldn't vote for James Roberts on such a prize if given the chance to do so I'd pick someone else instead.
