You know, it's one thing if people talk about obesity and people being overweight for serious concerns, health matters, etc. It's becoming ridiculous shit to for something like this to even be written and published. Here's the deal: Some people are genetically predisposed to obesity. Some people are mentally ill and eat due to that. (Not just eating while blue, actual medical conditions with names, etc.) You cannot catch fat from being around someone who's overweight. You cannot lose weight by being around people who are skinny. The only way to truly lose weight and to keep it off is to eat healthy (this would include counting calories), and EXERCISE. And yet, there are people who do just that and it still won't come off. For them, there are surgical procedures to help facilitate weight loss and get them on track to healthy eating and the lifestyle. These people aren't evil, they're not a plague, they just want to be happy like everyone else, and fuckers like the moron who wrote this piece of trash get their jollies out of the pain of others. Oh and FYI...last year, (this was in the news btw) they proved that overweight people are healthier and happier than first thought. And a good portion of them were even a bit heart healthier than the skinnies. Just because some crackpot wants an excuse for being fat doesn't mean it's because of fatties that he's one. That's almost like saying you'll catch gay if you hang around gay people, or catch black, asian, white, hispanic, if you hang with those people. Just beacuse you say it, does NOT make it true. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. If you always hang around someone who's always eating junk food, you yourself are likely to join in and eat more junk food than you normally would. It's not contagious as a disease, it's contagious as a behavior (for those who didn't bother to read the article) - just like hanging around people who smoke. That's how I started smoking, most everyone I knew did it. Peer pressure and wanting to fit in with those around you. It makes sense.
Yep. As the article says: That's NOTHING like saying you can catch white, black, hispanic, etc. You're either born those races, or you aren't. You're not born eating chips and pizza and playing video games all day. That's a habit, a habit that can be obtained by hanging around people who do that. Yeah, and you can catch good habits, like biking, working out and eating healthy, from your friends as well.
I think you need a good cross-section of people sizes in your social group. Maybe it's like periods when women share a home and eventually you'll all synchronize your weights.
And here I thought the only way to catch fat was to stand next to a trampoline at your average neighborhood jumping class.
Articles like this destroy my faith in humanity. Not the research itself, but the people who evidently read the first line, then decide that the research is stupid and proceed to mock things it never said. People like that make me a sad panda.
