I just got one on Friday...it's really not too bad, the bot mode is nicely detailed and articulated. The ship mode is pretty bland, it looks like a hodgepodge of hinges and backwards parts and the color scheme makes it look like a Chinese knockoff...but in a weird way that's fitting for Alpha Trion's character IMO. The lion mode has some nicely sculpted details but it just looks derpy for a beast toy released in 2016. Long story short, good robot mode with some bad alt modes, but still worth a buy if you like the character or Headmasters in general. My two cents.
It's a decent toy but a poor Alpha Trion. It feels like it would be better as a different character. The sculpt is well detailed, but so bulky that a lot of the toy is hindered in movement. And the unicorn horn is just weird. I don't know what anyone was thinking there.
As I understand it, it was an improvement, but V1 was such a clusterfuck anything would be an improvement. So while they fixed some things (IIRC his knees straighten, new metal hips and improved feet for weight and stability, his crotch flaps move independently from each other (?), his transformation is altered so some of the thin bit's aren't such an issue (?), but some of the fixes they did added new problems, like the new metal hips were prone to paint chipping, so much so that they included a second set in the pack. Anyway as a stung V1 user I didn't buy a V2, (so this is all second hand info off the top of my head) so I might be wrong on some of it. But it wasn't that much of an improvement.
I have two questions on Alpha Trion starship mode. 1. Does it hold together well enough where a kid could pretend to make it fly around? and 2. does it sit flat on a flat surface? I know it appears to do so but i wish to be sure.
Wow, I have one I haven't opened yet and I was thinking of selling/returning (because as an Alpha Trion toy, this must have been conceived/designed on drugs), but this thread is making me rethink this.
I like Alpha Trion. In addition to what other folks have said, I'll add that he's also one of the less hollow-feeling TR toys. Neither his legs or arms have that "paper thin hollow shell" feel that some other figures' limbs in the line have. While still not as chunky and solid as, say, a Cybertron toy, he's not bad.
Based on the original concept art that was shown on the news board a while back, I suspect this A3 was originally designed for a different line (he didn't have the ship mode and wasn't a headmaster IIRC) that may have been shelved.
Earlier today I walked in the toy aisle and some kid in front of me grabbed Alpha Trion off the shelf and excitedly brought it to Mom: "Can I get this?" and she agreed to buy it. That oddly put a smile on my face that even kids can appreciate a toy like that.
is it bad that i feel i want the figure more for this throne/toilet mode than the two official modes?
