Is Beast Wars Uprising REALLY what would've happened if BW Megatron had killed Optimus Prime?

Because to be honest, if BW Megatron had succeeded in killing Optimus Prime, history would've changed so that the Decepticons won the war, sure, but also when Unicron came to devour Cybertron, nothing would've been able to stop him as the Matrix would've been lost with Optimus. This timeline... really doesn't feel like that's what would've happened.

It originally wasn't intended as that. BW:U moreso just started as a darker one, which later tied into the ambiguity caused by that

Specifically the Unicron thing was adressed in The Inexorable March, in that there was a massive loss of life but they managed to pull through due to Point One Percenters being, well, that.

The reason it doesn't really make sense is that whole idea of BWU being a splinter timeline where Optimus died on the Ark was a daft invention of one of the editors at the Collectors' Club - the people who actually wrote the BWU stories never intended for that to be its origin.
