At least it should absorb water, gas and electric increases expected this summer... Which means that the energy costs won't cut into my disposable income... Which is what the politicians want, for me to continue irresponsibly disposing of my income into the economy.

How will they know to direct deposit? base don our tax filings?

Exactly. They will use the direct deposit info indicated on your 2007 tax return. So even if you owe, you should indicate a bank account on your 1040 form. It could save you months' delay. :D

I plan on putting it toward debt consolidation, but usually when I get extra money something on the car winds up needing fixing.

If my memory is correct, the last time the government gave us one of these "economic stimulus" checks when it came time to to file the taxes there was a question along the lines of "did you accept an economic stimulus payment in the amount of $XXX.XX".

I didn't "accept" anything, the government just sent me a check.
At any rate, selecting "yes" just forced you to take that amount off the amount you received as a tax return.

So, if the same scenario applies then "Free money = Repay the money next April".

Seriously? I don't remember that. That sucks, I'd rather wait to get it if that's the case.

Married + 2 kids = Cha-ching! I don't plan to do anything crazy with $1800 though. It will be going into the savings, don't tell the IRS though.

From everything I have read about this subject, you will not be taxed on this refund you will get.

Well some people get it free. The rest of us who work and earn money and actually pay taxes know that it definately won't be free, at least not for us. But this is nothing new. We have to pay taxes every year so that people who pay no taxes can get their "Earned" income credits and get $4,000 tax returns while we are lucky to get $200 even though we pay close to $4,000 (in federal).

Few truly get it free, especially that much in returns.

I'm glad to hear it will be here...would have been nice to know how much they were going to give, instead of the generic 'You might get' thing I got in my mailbox yesterday that told me nothing I didn't already know.

Attached to this bill is PORK spending focused at the politician's home areas to send local jobs money and local groups 'free shit'.

So it allows incumbents on both sides to buy votes and give their constitutes 'stuff' which they can claim as progress in 2008.

So this is just a very 'happy' bill they could attach their pork too this year because who doesn't love free money?

The entertaining thing about this stimulus check is that a bulk of the people whom I talk with at school are planning to place it straight into their checking or savings account and let it sit. I wonder how many people nationwide have the same idea?

Well I should be getting mine the first week around. Nice.

And I hope this isn't like the last time as stated when you just have to send it back later. But so far, this seems to be a free pass
