After being nagged for over a year by too many people, I upgraded my iPhone4. what an effin' mistake! iOS6 is not only a turd, but it ruined what little accessibility features in my phone that were tolerable. so, you'd think a phone would be like a laptop or desktop...clean it, reinstall old software and be happy again... Fugeddabouddit... You're -ucked and not in the great way. it seems that not even Apple or the carrier i use can downgrade the ohone's version from 6 to 5.1.1. i thought one of the cores of Nerd/Geekdom was the freedom to change or alter your tech within legal limits, within your rights. Guess Apple forgot that.
Downgrade to iOS 5.1.1! Just download the iOS and when clicking "restore" on iTunes, make sure you're holding the shift key (at least that's what I think you're supposed to press)
A phone is not like a desktop. I think most people who know their tech would know that both Smartphones and Tablets are really just novelties, and only a laptop/desktop would really get work done. That said, I was considering upgrading my iPad to iOS6.0, but it doesn't seem like its even out yet. So I guess Apple doesn't want to support my (1st version, brick-like) iPad. If it ever does come out, should I upgrade? I don't see exactly what problems the OP is having, but I need to weigh up whether the crappy OS is worth the apps that only work on 6.0 or higher. [/meanwhile, I'll just use windows and android...because I like functionality ]
No you can't do that. It'll practically destroy the phone because when you upgrade it's operating system, the baseband is also updated. To the OP, hold off on upgrading to iOS 6.0.1, an Untethered Jailbreak will be out on Christmas. Then you can Jailbreak and get your "Freedom". Because Freedom is the right of all sentient phones.
I've found that any phone, even Android, works better if you leave the original version on there. I mean, do the upgrades from like 2.1.1 to 2.1.3 or something, but don't go to 3.1. I made that mistake with my Droid X. Went from Froyo ( worked great ) to Gingerbread, and started having problems. So when I got my LG Revo, I rooted it and froze the software updater. I'm still using Gingerbread ( which it came with ) even though other people with the same phone have upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich. Phone still works.
Insane Galvatron, that's just bad luck. Everyone knows that Android doesn't progress linearly along its version numbers. Phones run on 2.3 Gingerbread while tablets went from 3.2 Honeycomb to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Upgrading your phone to 3.1, you were in essence giving your phone an older, crappier OS. Honeycomb is infamous for being bad, came out either before or close to Gingerbread so it wasn't an improvement by any means, was designed for tablets not phones and what you did was the equivalent of taking a Windows 7 computer and "upgrading" it to Vista. It's worse. Most people agree that Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean are better due to their design being made for both phones and tablets (evidenced by the large number of phones, like the S3, which run Ice Cream Sandwich). if a phone can run ICS, it's usually better for it than Gingerbread. As long as you avoid Honeycomb, you'll be fine. Like Windows users have to avoid Vista, Android users need to know to stay away from Honeycomb.
I was just using the numbers as example, they in no way reflected the Android software I went on to talk about. My Droid X came with Honeycomb, but updated to Froyo shortly after. It worked great after a hard reset. It was the upgrade to Gingerbread from there that screwed it up. The LG I got when I upgraded to a new phone came with Gingerbread, so I kept it there. There was no upgrade to Honeycomb.
Moral of the story: Stay the hell away from Honeycomb and you'll be fine. My S3 is running ICS, I know a friend who has Jelly Bean on his Nexus. I won't go back to Gingerbread phones, that's for sure.
Except Gingerbread screwed up my phone. I believe newer software end up being too much for older hardware. So when a phone gets upgraded to a whole new version, it can't handle it and that's where the problems come in. I had a similar problem with my first Gen iPhone. By the time the 3S came out, my phone upgraded automatically and it just couldn't handle the new software. It bogged down soo slow.
I think Apple's now starting to phase out even 2nd gen technology. I know a lot of apps mow require 3rd gen iPod Touch units or newer. I'm now wondering how long there is left until Apple phases out the 3rd gen iPod Touch I've got. I don't use it much, but still... ...having it made redundant would be annoying. [/reasons why I prefer Android...]
