How I came to own so many Cybertronian insects isn’t important. What is though is keeping them safe and available for scientific study. So instead of preserving them in boxes or on shelves where they’re prone to getting lost or running away, I decided to build them an observable yet classy habitat.

Though this started out as a relatively simple glass domed cylinder, it took a fair amount of work to make it compatible for Insecticon life. A second strand of LEDs was added to meet their energy needs as they mainly feed via induction. The new strand's terminals were soldered under the base to utilize an existing battery box as there wasn’t room for an additional one. There’s also a second switch on the bottom now so either one or both LED strands can be turned on at the same time. Stripped copper wires were also added to give the strands some needed structure so the Insecticons wouldn’t weigh them down while climbing and crawling around.

The original interior base was gutted out and replaced with a new design since it was initially sealed to the glass cylinder and there was no way to add the LEDs, copper wire, or the insects themselves and preserve it. The new interior base was given a reflective platform that makes use of magnets and other hidden hardware so the concealed base cap can still come off when necessary but remain secure when not in use. This unexpected step was required because the original scrapped base also contained the threading for screws which used to hold everything together.

On the interior base you can see a lone Cybertronian scorpion enjoying various electronic components as they are yet another source of food and interactive enrichment for the creatures. Perhaps you recognize him and the other scorpions, along with the large fly, from a couple of documentaries (2007's Transformers and 2009's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) where full grown examples interacted violently with humans. While visiting Egypt, a young man hoping to impress his girlfriend was shown disassembling a dangerous Insecticon fly and the US military dealt with adult scorpions on two separate occasions resulting in loss of life on both sides. All in all there are four different species of scorpions, a couple of wasps, a stag beetle, and the aforementioned fly-like specimen at the top comprising nine separate Insecticons total. Similar to many species of fish, the alien insects here are not expected to outgrow their environment.

The vivarium’s current Insecticon manifest includes:

    (1) Studio Series Scorponok

    (2) Movie mini Scorponoks

    (1) Movie mini Scorponok (black Stalker)

    (1) DOTM Cyberverse Scorponok

    (2) Thrilling 30 Waspinators

    (1) Thrilling 30 Chop Shop

    (1) HFTD Insecticon
