Is this heresy ?
Oh well, im not a huge Soundwave fan anyway
To be fair the Sunbow show failed quite a few of the characters, ALL of Soundwave's cassettes had their own personalities in the tech specs. Similarly rather than them all being dumb cavemen, the Dinobots each had a distinct personality as well. Same with basically all the combiners.
And let's not forget Soundwave himself. Toy bio Soundwave superior, Sunbow Soundwave inferior!
That's very fair, I just think the G1 cartoon is likely the most common starting point for most 80s fans in terms of their expectations of / experience with the characters. And of course that further complicates things for guys like Shockwave who was a completely different character in the comic vs. cartoon (and even from his brief snippet in Bumblebee they clearly chose to go off the latter).
What about Starscream ? His portrayals between cartoon and comics were different but not drastically and even if they chose to pay more attention to the former he is hardly a forgettable background character, yet they still came up with doritoscream
I've explained at length in the other thread what I think their thought process was with the Starscream design, and even though it wasn't very G1-accurate, there was a lot of thought and effort put into it. That's just on the design side, though.
As for character - I do think in ROTF and DOTM they did get very close to the G1 cartoon from a characterization perspective. Obviously the biggest misstep is never having Starscream make an explicit move against Megatron; I think that would have needed to be a big part of its own movie. That is something that absolutely can and should aim to be improved upon in future TF movies / continuities!
So in short, it seems less that said director was inspired by it, and more like, this is what you don't do?
Also, dorito-scream looks nothing like Screamer, and his general design is very iconic and recognizable throughout most of his iterations.
and as i said there, doritoscream design should have been used for another character, i even suggested G2 Dreadwing given how their body types are so similar
G1 Starscream, specially in the cartoon, may have been whiny and kind of a loser, but i wouldn´t say in general he is comparable to doritoscream, take a look at both of their deaths, G1 Starscream died in a brief moment of glory as result of yet another of his power plays, doristoscream died playing with a human while spitting green stuff that i guess is energon ? and of course, he gets killed by Sam
But it would definitely make him more recognizable. I think part of the reason for the Decepticons being so dark toned is because Michael Bay has a fetish for military vehicles. And back in 07 apparently they were trying to make everything as realistic as possible and colorful military vehicles made no sense. But then again we have Prime from AOE who scanned a random truck with white paintjob and then when the new parts materialized he was red and blue suggesting they can alter the alt. modes appearence by will.
Undeniable but i would still find it fugly
Crosshair is probably steampunk-ish with the google, minus the coat
Agreed, Vulture-Scream is such a badass.
That shot of Starscream transforming mid-flight and swinging up onto that bridge blew my mind as a kid.
It's awesome. People seem to forget that in 2007, there was absolutely nothing quite like this. No other movie had achieved this quality of visual effects at this scale, even Spider-Man. This stuff was mindblowing!
Of course, now it seems like the sky is the limit and there's some new VFX breakthrough every day, but this was truly in a league of its own back then (2007 is "back then"? Pinch me)
I liked it as a kid, the 07 movie was my first exposure to the franchise after all, but nowadays while the direction of the scene is fine, i abhor the design being used
Yeah, I was expecting that if a Transformer movie ever got made it would start with one TF in vehicle mode most of the time. I was amazed that they used as many as they did and they interacted so well with their surroundings...
Wait, this thread still exists?
“Now that’s a thread name I have not heard in a long time... long time...”
I’m more mature now, looking back at my old posts, I realize I was... a little irrational. But, gotta fight fire with fire, right?
The Bayverse is over. Why are we still discussin the designs?
Separate names with a comma.
