Anyone ever tried using rubberized paint on Detolf shelves to make them slip-resistant? I'm considering trying 1-2 shelves to see if this would work. Performix 11209 Plasti Dip Clear Multi-Purpose Rubber Coating Aerosol - 11 oz.
You're better off just replacing the shelves. That seems like more trouble than its worth, and it'll make the glass more opaque.
That may be the case--may try it since I can peel it off if it doesn't perform like I'd hoped. Will post results if I do, good or bad.
I joined this club today. I'm too damned tired to put them together, and there were so many people at IKEA that I forgot to investigate bases. Bought two. I have Berber carpet. I would put them in the living room but, my cat would try to scale them. I'm going to anchor them. Any quick advice?
For anchors? I was about to recommend any old L-bracket, but then I half-remembered... something... from Ikea including a leash-type restraint that would allow for some movement (too much rigidity being bad) but still keep it from falling over. It may have even come with my Detolfs, but it's been years and my memory is crap.
Mine came with an adjustable L bracket. I can't find the wall straps anywhere. Going to have to order them.
I wouldn't recommend it, because it will stick to your bots over time. It won't do any damage as it will just peel off but you'd need to recoat the shelf every time you move a figure and scratch/peel off the coating. I use it on my Camaro and on some acrylic shelving but I coat the bottom so the shelf looks black. I'm using vinyl now on my shelf, doesn't really add grip but it looks good.
Right, so I'm experimenting with light panels right now... Cut down to Detolf shelf size! It's only one shelf but it lights both down AND up, so tomorrow when I have all three shelves upgraded it should look absolutely epic. If does shadow and obscure the shelves more when the lights are off though, so there is that negative, but I think it's blown away by the positive! Look at that light! Best Detolf lighting EVER!
It's basically a light panel that are in shop displays like Estate agents or whatever. I'm hoping if this experiment is successful the chap I'm getting these off can sell these.
Do you have any pics of these panels before they're installed/cut? These look like they would provide great even light distribution for a light tent. That looks awesome BTW!
This is how I did mine, the prices on the LEDs has come down quite a bit since I did them, but Tikgnat's solution looks pretty freakin' awesome. The Nerd-Cave Reconfiguration: Let There Be Light
Coreplex - Rambling from Inside the Grid: LED Lighting DIY for Ikea Detolf Cabinets But in hindsight.. changes I would make... hardwire the shelves and skip the connectors. They are just a failure point.. and use the round wiremold raceway you can get from homedepot and spray paint it grey instead of worrying about tucking the wires away. The small raceway looks perfect in the cases.
Doesn't IKEA have a recommended puck light? edit: I'm going to grab me some of these tomorrow: LEDBERG LED spotlight - IKEA
I would replace my DIY LED strip lights with the panels, but a cursory google search turns up panels that are ~$40 USD each for 6x6in. Tikgnat, hope you're getting a deal on them...
Ouch Don't think I could do 12 Detolfs at that price, might even be too cost prohibitive to do a light tent with. Gonna have to look around and see
