interesting. I would have thought the vague nature of the transformation would make things more difficult to figure out, but you make a great point about that giving you more latitude for your own creativity and engineering choices. If I understand what you mean about parts carrying over, I agree with your perspective. I like when you see wheels, lights, and other vehicle “kibble” in the robot mode. can’t wait to see where you continue to take this.
So I have now printed half of the new parts (blue and temporary yellow) and figured it's good enough to show even if some things doesn't tab in yet. (the red and gray are still the old version) The biggest difference is the large shoulder hinges which was the first design detail I decided on. You can see it here on this old sketch. Back then I apparently ment to slide and rotate but that has long been replaced with a double joint. For some reson thou I didn't design the double joint, only marking roughly where it would go. Its design caused a few problems as a lot of stuff was in the way. Here is just one of the design issues, the shape of the hinge itself. The pink area is the cut out needed for rotating which will be a void in the large part. My first attempt was with a large hinge but that (unsurprisingly) left a big void. (I didn't even finish the second hinge) The next attempt I tried a small round shape which looked a lot better. (I just lost the little top detail) This is the one I printed. Finally, here is a picture of the leg with the front panels finished (it has been done for a while, I just never photographed it).
WOW That looks awesome, love the way your doing the torso becoming the cab but i have no idea where you will get the rest of the cab bits from? Amazing stuff though
Yes, hiding/storing all the white cab parts in robot mode is a big problem. Most likely they will fold together an sit on the back.
Love the way the leg is coming together. Torso as well, but I believe this is our first sight of the Leg.
I wasn't going to post anyting yet as I still need to print some more parts but had to share this. I had just barely got (almost) everything together (with the help of some tape and adhesive putty) and I posed him next to PlanetX Cacus. Earlier attempts had felt a bit small so I was afraid he wouldn't look good but with the extra parts now added and scaling up the forearms by 10% it work really well. So here you get a quick photo of my IDW collection so far.
So is he done modeling ready to print or needs more modeling work? How come his thighs are different? looks absolutely amazing anyways, cant wait for him to be done and to see how the vehicle mode looks!
As I said I was planing to whait with posting photos unntill all new parts was printed but he looked so good I released a sneak peak. The thighs are the same as the very first pic I posted and one is different because the print failed and I never printed a new one. Now I have added ratchets in the knees and shoulders so the old thiges are just balancing on the new knees. Same with the elbows which haven't been scaled for the larger forearms yet. Oh and thank you to everyone for your nice comments (and criticism) it really help me through the project!
Love this and your Elita-1! Fun to watch it unfold! (see what I did there...cause sometimes transformers.....the panels can fold and ...nevermind.)
Thank you! I've been following your insecticon project(s) for a while and am impressed by your Gobots too. You are using Blender too, right. Maybe we could excange some advice (is it worth a thread or is PM better) My Elita is very early in development and have not been shown anywhere yet. You where probably confusing my Arcee with this amazing design. Earthrise Peterbilt Elita-1 (Scratch 3D Print)
Progress have been slow lately (mostly because I've been doing other stuff) but I have finally printed the new design. Litle have changed visually from the sneak peak but now the parts hold together and the sholders and knees have got (weak) ratchets. The waist is still a mess and the sholder mounts doesn't tab in so photographing was a pain. Here is one of the robot and a few of the truck so far. The cab is still mising and the front section (torso) doesn't conect with the back section (legs).
this looks bloody incredible. if it helps, the shoulder pylons on a sideways hinge might get them behind the cab
Really impressed with the progress from your initial post to where you are now, the head sculpt is great also
