    That's right, the closest planet to the sun.

    NASA - MESSENGER Finds New Evidence for Water Ice at Mercury's Poles

    As a tl;dr, here is NASA's press release;

    In addition, this material that covers the ice is suggestive and highley likely to involve amino acids. The existence of amino acids on Mercury is a big thing, because as scientists have debated, amino acids have the potential to create life.

    Holy shit! This changes everything!!

    ...

    No, wait. It has no impact on my life at all.

    I wish scientists would make discoveries that could actually improved things here and now in our day to day.

    Holy crap that's awesome, I would say that life seems unlikely due to the high temperatures, but hell, if we've discovered ice there, who knows?
    Oh, and when are we going to see the big announcement by NASA over Curiosity?

    But that's the problem, most of this crap technically aren't discoveries at all, anyways. Their only theories, or like the article states, merely "suggestions."

    If they're willing to use words like "strongly suggest", that ironically conveys a level of confidence in their hypothesis that's worth really considering.

    Still doesn't change the fact that they don't know for sure. When someone or something travels to Mercury and confirms without a doubt there is ice on the planet, then I'll believe it.

    I'm not too surprised by this discovery. There's places at the poles that receive little, or no light on Mercury, thus allowing for this.

    Eh, most of our problems are like starvation in Africa. It's not that we don't have enough food, but all the jerks that screw everything up in between it and the starving people. If scientists discovered infinite unpolluting energy tomorrow, the same people that screw everything up now would screw that up too.

    There is certainly a degree of obstruction and inefficiency involved, but I would argue that something like third-world poverty has more to do with the systemic problem of sustainability. The planet has finite resources, and an expanding population; clearly this needs to be reconciled.

    Santa Claus exists! He's on Mercury! I told you he exists!
