I played the living hell outta Ratchet and Clank: Future this weekend, and I got in a mood, so I went scouting out all the "platformers" from the trio company, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, and Insomniac. I picked up Sly 1,2,3 and Jak 3 (I already own the Ratchets and Jak and Daxter, and Jak 2 was designed by Satan. I love how those games share an engine and feel polished like one another, but play differently enough. In fact, I believe that Ratchet and Clank 3's intro screen has Ratchet and Clank playing Sly Cooper, and Jak2 on their little screen as a nod to their fellow devs. Sly is so stylized and I love the sneaking around aspect. The atmosphere in that game is moody. Jak 3 is just beautiful to look at, though I don't understand why they didn't give him a strafe ability. I completely agree with not comforming to the typical FPS controls, but a Strafe would have really helped to keep him from running in circles shooting, and Ratchet has never felt like a TPS to me, even if they do use those controls. You have the option of turning them off and just using strafe and lock on. Still Jak 3 is a little masterpiece and the cinematics and darker storyline make it worth while. It's really nice to go back and play through these games, and I really hope they bring Jak back for PS3 (I can't even imagine what Naughty will do graphically after looking at how good Uncharted looks). Sly will probably be the last to return, since Sucker is working on Imfamous, but I really hope they don't dump the Racoon, he's actually one of my favorite, next to Clank, who despite being a sidekick will always be my favorite.... and David Kaye voicing him is nothing but FTW.
i really liked the first jak and daxter. played the hell out of that. sly interested me, but i never picked it up.
o, don't get me wrong, I want to see Nate in like 50 more games, but I also want to see the world of Jak expanded using the power of the PS5. Albiet cliche, I would like to see Uncharted take the road of Indiana Jones. Nathan Drake and the Valley of llamatron Balls etc etc.
Sly Cooper is one of the best platformer series' ever. I'd be in heaven if they made more, but with the ending of 3, I don't see it happening.
Now you have my interest! My problem with the Jack games were as follows; 1. Weak setting. Your mileage may, indeed, vary. But dystopian society with the crazy hero teetering on the edge of darkness was kinda old way before it began. 2. Diluted mechanics. Every new game introduced more stuff that wasn't what I really wanted to be doing. Even done as well as it was I found it arbitrary and overall only served to weaken the series strengths. 3. Not a great fan of the artstyle. 4. Daxter >_< I have the same issues with Ratchet and Clank too. They are beautiful, masterfully crafted games, they're just not for me unfortunately.
You should at least give R&C:F a rental. Even if you take away all the style and nonsense, it is a solid and fun-as hell to play game. Blowing up Crates has never been so much fun Thanks for not spoiling the ending. Now I'm looking forward to it even more. I never beat 3, just one and I'm halfway through 2. I agree with you about it being great. It's different enough to separate it from all the others. I'm not sure how much fun I have playing as Murray, especially after zipping around with Sly, but it does add variety, and I love nuking sleeping enemies.
I love the R&C games myself, but I never got around to picking up the Jak games. Not to say I don't eye them up EVERY time I see them (I rented the first one well before playing the first R&C, and I did enjoy it). Can't wait until next month for Size Matters to hit the PS2.
Played the first Jak and Dax never the sequels but I did play Daxter. Played the first Sly Cooper not the sequels. Never I played R & C until the PS3 one, which I loved.
Not a lot of people liked R&C Deadlock, but I loved the coop aspect of it, and the vehicles were a lot of fun
Naughty Dog was at their best when they did the first three Crash Bandicoot games and some of the Ratchet and Clank games. Jak 3 on PS2 is one of my favorite games. They are one of the best development studios in my opinion. One of my other favorite studios that was dissolved and absorbed was Psygnosis. They did the Colony Wars space combat games on PS1, G-Police, several of the Wipe-Out racing games and other awesome games. I wish I knew where some of the team went but I want to say they went to Naughty Dog or Universal Media. Games like Uncharted, Warhawk, SOCOM 4 and other games are going to be the reason why I want a PS3 over the X-Box 360.
