Going by the video that Godziboy1993 posted I'm pretty sure it's a meteor. The fact that the trail is so wide implies that it's moving in a part of the atmosphere where the pressure is low i.e. high altitude. A vapor trail like that would tend to be compressed in the lower atmosphere like the contrails we're used to seeing behind airplanes. Plus the part where it "bursts" implies ablation, that the atmospheric friction is causing it to heat up and lose material. What happened there is that a pocket of volatile gas hidden among the rock or ice heated up so quickly that it exploded and disrupted the trail. Especially notice that the forward end of the shockwave momentarily "outruns" the object; an object propelling itself would not shoot its reaction mass before it. As to its longevity, it could have been a rather large meteoroid that took a long time to vaporize entirely or it was just skimming the atmosphere and bounced back out. Enough of it might have survived to decelerate and land, so the Chinese authorities might be able to track it and find the remains, assuming it didn't go on to fall someplace else.

This isn't the first time it's happened in China. They also have a similiar roswell incident a few decades ago. Add in the arizona lights, and heaven knows what other events that have been forgotten overtime, and it's not that surprising really. Heck, most people still think earth is only populated by carbon based life.
