GH3 is my first foray into music gaming. Never played DDR, or any of the arcade MTV music games or anything previous from GH. So a few weeks ago I got GH3 for the PS3. I played through it on easy without much trouble at all. I tried it on medium and that fourth fret kills me. I've been using practice mode and I still can't get the hang of that fourth fret. Were the previous entries so difficult?
Yes and no. 1 and 2 were more punishing in some regards (HO and PO's) whereas 3 is far more forgiving. However 3's notecharts are far more erratic and nonsensical making things far more difficult than one or two ever were. But, as always, practice is king. I played 1 on medium, 2 on PS2 medium, moving up to hard on 2 on 360, sticking with it for 3. I'll probably hit expert around GH 5. But I am boycotting GH and Activision now so... ROCK BAND!
If I could have afforded Rock Band, I would have bought that. My wife was already giving me the evil eye for blowing a $100 gift card on GH3.
Ouch! Can you take it back and get another giftcard? The smaller RB bundles are due in 6 or so weeks.
When I first played GH2 that fourth fret was an issue, now it's the 5th. Like twist said, keep practicing, it should get easier.
I've been practicing and practicing and I still can't 5 star the Slayer song on easy! Also stuck on Tom Morello's duel on medium. Smaller Rock Band bundles? Haven't heard of those...I'll have to go and Google that...
Joe...GH3 was my first try into to rhythm music games too, and I had the same problem. I breezed through Easy, but Medium was killing me with that fourth fret and the faster pace. One thing I noticed was that my pinky finger was weak compared to the rest of my fingers, which was what made the fourth fret so difficult. I stopped being so obsessive about keeping my four fingers on the same four buttons all the time (after all, you don't rigidly hold your hand in one place on a real guitar, why would you do it in a guitar game?). and started moving my three good fingers up and down the frets, and it helped. Eventually I noticed I WAS using my pinky sometimes and it was getting stronger, but it came naturally without my even realizing it. Also, it took a fair bit of practice. When I started playing Medium I thought it was impossible, but after a month or so I could easily 5 star most of the songs. I tried to move up to Hard, but it just isn't fun for me, even after repeated practice. I can squeak out 4 stars on the earlier songs in the career progression, but it's a struggle. For the record, I ended up trying Rock Band and liking the note charts and variety so much more that I'm selling GH3. I sort of feel like I missed out on the GH series heyday, since as I understand it the note charts were apparently so much better in 1 & 2. The thing that ultimately killed GH3 was the hardcore difficulty, while good for veteran players, completely ruins it as a party game. I had some people over around Christmas who were excited to play, but gave up after two songs because they couldn't keep up on Easy.
Practice practice practice practice etc etc and so on and so forth. In terms of speed and number of notes, Rock Band is GH3-lite. Rock Band is easier for sure. Are the TFW2005 Shredders dead? *logs in* Odd, my groupies don't seem to have dropped off. At least significantly. Didn't they make a big deal about if you don't play, you'll lose all your groupies? I was in the same boat for a time. Then I finally figured it out and I'm really really glad I did.
on medium you can put a finger on each fret... thats how i got good at medium. the 5th fret is my achilles too. that and i no longer have access to the game...
Ya I actually hated GH when I first tried it, I was like Randy on that one South Park and though it was impossible. Even on easy I could barely make it through a song. It's not a game you can just jump into and expect to dominate after a week of playing, it's only over time and practice were it really starts to come together. I've been playing 2 & 3 since December and only now have been able to start going through it on hard, to which I can only still make it about half way through. I like it that way now too as it also keeps GH from getting old. Rock Band is a must, as Twist put it in another thread it's the game of the forever. Though don't expect it to get any easier, I'm pulling my hair out trying to complete the drums on medium in solo Just started a Band World Tour too and man I had a complete blast this weekend, as starting Friday must have spent about 20 hours going through it, good times
*sigh* After reading through this thread I want to play guitar in Rock Band now, but my guitar died and I haven't sent it back yet. I hit a wall playing drums in hard, so I'm don't want to do that quite yet...maybe I'll put in some GH 1 or 2 and have some fun.
I just d'loaded a bunch of songs for Rock Band. Loads of fun. I wish the hammer ons and pull offs are more forgiving in Rock Band.
They're fine actually, like in GH2. GH3's are too loose, and you're going to not want to play GH1 because they are brutally unforgiving in it.
I played GHI on easy...didnt graduate to medium until GHII...didnt move onto hard until GH80's...Rockband brought me into expert. Thats about 3 years of practice it took me to get to where I am now. The trick is saying "Ok, Im done with easy." Then just keep playing on medium, don't give up and go back to playing easy. Eventually your pinky will figure out whats what. (BTW - the jump from easy to medium was nothing compared to the jump from medium to hard)
