The old toys just seemed more alive and dynamic with the light piping they used to do. The heads now days just seem so dull in comparison. Maybe it's just the old-timer in me but, I really miss the light piping they used to do for the eyes.

The Siege Seeker mold has great light piping.

As much as I liked the larger Duocon type Black Shadow, I did miss the light piping of the CHUG deluxe which looked fantastic.

Deluxe G2 2-pack Megatron had great light piping too and I still think it had the best head sculpt of any Megatron toy. Same with the often maligned CHUG Galvatron.

Titans Return Megatron and Galvatron really suffered from the unpainted faces and the bland grey plastic drained the character and life from them.

Can't forget to mention CHUG Cyclonus when talking about Light Piping.

There has been some good light piping recently. Siege seeker mold, soundwave, and shockwave are examples. But light piping is awesome so I hope we get more.

    +1 from for light piping.

I remember going “wow, this is awesome” when I first came across it. Still love it.

It has its charms, yes...but when the light source is removed, most lightpiped eyes look kinda...dead.

That is very true. There is a trade off for sure. When light is present it looks incredible and when no light is available they do look very dead compared to standard painted eyes.

100% in favor of light piping. Easily one of my favorite aspects of a figure when it has it.
If certain plastic is used, like the stuff that's slightly opaque or shiny the lack of light sometimes doesn't look dead. Add light and it truly comes alive.

I liked light piping because back in the day that meant a multi part head, with translucent plastic for the eyes and the back of the head, held in with a screw. If you didn't like the effect (or eyen wanted the change the eye color with clear paint) you could easily unscrew the head, take it apart and paint over the eyes and back easily. Much harder to customize the one piece heads, gotta have a super fine tip brush and steady non hamfisted hands :)

Totally agree on CHUG Sky Shadow and Cyclonus. Another really beautiful one is Universe Hound.

Siege Shockwave is the best modern example. It just works with minimal effort and looks great. Siege Skyfire is the best modern failure, however. Backpack blocks light from reaching the lightpiping window and the clear blue is dark.

There is a way to get the best of both worlds in low and high level light but I assume using fluorescent dyes in clear resin would be too expensive for mainstream toys. I was going to experiment making fluorescent eyes for Jetfire soon. I made a LED mod for his head but getting annoyed by how fast the tiny batteries run out.

Yes please! I have been fiddling with my Siege Starscream and I just adore how the lightpiping makes the figures feel alive with the light coming out. I always remember as a kid being fascinated on the eyes and how they glow up with the look of them whether it's red, blue, green, yellow or purple. They just feel so good like that when Hasbro was in expert level in the early 2010s.

Love me some light piping. If you photograph your figures, light-piped figures always look more alive in photos than those without light-piping.

Everyone always says painted eyes are superior because without careful light composition, light piping often leads to dead eyes... except the same is true for painted eyes!! Half of the time, my TFs' eyes are in shadow because the shape of their own head blocks light from reaching them. And "just set some lights up in your shelves" is an invalid rebuttal, I counter that with if you're putting lights in your shelves, lightpiping will work just as well as painted eyes.

Honestly, all TFs' eyes should be made of ionized gas so they're glowing and visible at all times. actually shit, that would be pretty cool...

I also like lightpiping. I find it really annoying when a figure was obviously designed to have it and it has an opaque piece of plastic instead... looking at you in particular Generations Warpath!

This 100%. Whenever to take down Siege Shockwave or Galactic Man I always love to block and unblock that light piping to mimic his speech blink from the G1 cartoon.
