I have a white ceramic Hello Kitty bank that requires painting. This was bought to be a gift for a friend of mine. She likes Hello Kitty and the Japanese character Totoro. I'd like to paint it up to look like a Hello Kitty wearing a Totoro costume, but I've never painted white glazed ceramic before.

What would be a good type/brand of paint to use on ceramic? Would I need to sand/rough up the glazed white ceramic surface before painting? What would be a good clear coat/sealer to use after I'm done painting it?

I'm basically aiming for something like this or maybe a slight variation where kitty's face is visible where Totoro's mouth should be (like she's wearing a costume or an animal skin :p ). The pose you see Hello Kitty in below is the pose the bank is sculpted in except her bow is on the right (not left as seen in the image).

    Thanks.

it's glazed? I would sand it first, try some 600 grit, then 900 or 1200. Acrylics seem to bond to ceramic better, I'd chose those. Then clear coat with lacquer if you can. Even a good rattle can would be good.
