For all the complaints about not being able to recognize the characters or that they look like shards of metal if you compare them to the zords in the upcoming Power Rangers film perhaps you can appreciate that it could be worse. This might be just my opinion.

This is a new poster and if not for watching the show years ago I wouldn't know what animals the zords are supposed to represent. Compare Grimlock to the T-rex zord and ask yourself which looks more like the dinosaur. Both are alien dinosaurs.

I don't think they are that bad. I do agree the newer designs need more vehicle parts though.

I think they did a good job of making them look more distinct from each other. And in fact they are even more faithfull to G1 transformers. Becuz if you remember the G1 cartoon some of their vehicle parts would simly disappear just to save on animation costs (for example: the wheels on the legs of Optimus Prime simply disappear when he transforms in robot form)

I agree. Reverting Bumblebee's design for example was a smart move.

Actually I'd say the Red Ranger Zord looks like G1/WFC Grimlock. The giant rear thigh panel and the head looking like it's modeled after the old, incorrect concept of the T-rex (before they decided it was much sleeker or something) are the dead giveaways. As is how all of the zords visible in this shot still clearly retain the famous traits of the prehistoric animals they're modeled after. Yellow has giant sabertooth cat teeth and feline frame, Blue has the three triceratops horns, Black has the mastadon tusks, and while it's barely even on this image, Pink's head is airborne for the pterodactyl.

Frankly these things do the psuedo-vehicular exoskeleton frame look a lot better than anything the TF films have tried. I mean, Yellow still looks like an obviously alien take on a predatory cat and it doesn't need excessive spikes or its face swapped for the eye of Sauron like what happened to Ravage.

Compare to say, this from the AoE Superbowl trailer.

It is extremely hard to make out where Bumblebee ends and Swoop begins to the point my dad walked past, saw this image, and asked why there is a wing coming out of the dude's butt. And this is a STILL IMAGE. When in motion, there wouldn't be too much to define where either character stops and the other begins if you weren't intamately aware of the exact designs of the characters before this point in the film anyway.

The only problem is, Mastodon and Triceratops looks like insects.

I think that's just the popular thing with anything supposedly from space - just look at Buzzswole and Phermosa from the latest pokemon games, a.k.a. 'Ultra Beasts' from 'Ultra Space'.

No, seriously, you need to see them. Buzzswole simply needs to be seen to be believed.

Because you are familiar with what their supposed to be. They don't look like a triceraops or a mastadon at all to me. I'd be interested to know how someone one who is completely unfamiliar with Power Rangers would identify them.

I have no problems with the movie design aesthetics; AOE and TLK Optimus Prime is my favorite ever.

Power Rangers still scare the crap out of me, YIKES

No longer innovative as the first movie. Imagine the designs of blackout, starscream, brawl, barricade and everyone else on tf1. Not as tad bit as the latest movies.

Ultimately the question must be asked if the movie Zords even need to be recognizable Earth animals. You can tell they're creatures of a sort with well defined profiles and the rangers can pilot them, presumably with the ability to form a Megazord.

I actually wouldn't mind TF5 Barricade's design so much but that head is just awful. They made him less evil looking for absolutely no damn reason. The car mode sucks, too, way too NFS: Undercover for me.

I love the torso piece and weapon design, the only problem is the faceplate, it's just...creepy. Especially Bee, since he suppose to be the cute and friendly looking one. And the decepticons, they deserve more colours and different faces.

The new Zords are just as bad as the Bayformers look. The only difference is the new Zords are retaining their original colors.

Unrelated, but does anyone think that Power Rangers poster looks awful? Between the title font and the overall composition it looks more like a fan poster than something official.

It all comes down to personal taste. Some people just love the movie designs and some people like me hate them with a passion. The designs in the Power Ranger movie seeming even more like a train wreck really doesn't do anything to dent my passionate dislike of the Transformers movie designs. That's a bit like saying well the Twins in Revenge of the Fallen are not as bad as any character in Adam Sandler's The Ridiculous 6.

Honestly I'm just not a real fan of the modern look in movie robots or mechs in movies. I'm eagerly awaiting the day when what's popular in robot/mech designs changes so that maybe I will like the next trend better. Seems like I spend most of my robot/mech time either watching anime or seeing what sort of Generations style toy Hasbro can roll out next.

Honestly though you will always find that people are never going to agree on what's the coolest look. Some tread-heads are all about the World War II designs while others insist that the modern armor has the coolest look. Some people love the World War II aircraft designs, some people love the 80's aircraft, and other people think the next generation fighters take the sexiest aircraft prize. Car nuts can never agree on the coolest looking decade or the coolest looking brand. So it's not odd at all that Transformers fans are going to debate what designs are the cool designs.

And I think more to the point, Takara's designers have been going out of their way to hide wheels etc. On the Masterpiece figures, suggesting that's the ideal look for the G1 characters. Even as a kid I just understood that wheels etc. on the robot forms was just an unavoidable part of having a toy car turn into a toy robot rather than a defining trait. I'm sure if someone wanted to create a transforming robot they'd hide what they could in both modes.

Anyway, never been a fan of Power Rangers, but I think these look pretty cool, whatever they are or meant to be.

The bayformers designs are a little bit exaggerated but, Bay don't have any respect to the franchise.

I don't think comparing the movie Zords is a fair choice, they look like they're just vehicles with animal elements in place rather than mechanical animals that turn into body parts.
