I can't help thinking about Disorderlies when they are on the airplane.

yeah... you shouldn't need special accommodations because you made a bad life choice.

Reading the article, I have to wonder who approved her flying out of the country, and why they bothered accommodated her in the first place. There are certain, rare, occasions that I can understand odd accommodations for passengers. Too unearthly fat to fit in the standard seat? Definitely NOT one of them.

How long would a flight from Hungary to New York even be? Are they positive she wouldn't have died on the flight anyways? That and, as it's been pointed out, there ARE hospitals in Hungary. They wouldn't know her medical history, but it wouldn't have taken long to fill them in on the necessary bits.

The airport is definitely NOT responsible here.

I too am wondering why she wasn't able to get medical care in hungary, or a surrounding area, if it was so urgent, or why she travelled at all if she was already in medical distress. Was her kidney failure a sudden, acute occurrence, or was she already in poor health?

I was raised not to speak ill of the dead but it sounds like they both knew she didn't have long to live and wanted to say goodbye to her homeland and loved ones; certainly understandable. What the airlines don't have a right to do is to deal with this couple inconsistently which the stress more than likely contributed to her death. I get stressed out every time I fly through Philly so I can understand flying from another country to this one.

Well, in this day of age, people just blame one another. If something already happened, it's crucial to fix the problem rather than pointing fingers at each other, though it's a tough loss for the husband. Well, ihope stories like these are incentives for people to watch out for themselves more.

I have actually known people whose metabolism swung the other way...he was almost put out of the Navy because they thought he was an anorexic after some hospital observations and some tests he was discovered to have an accelerated metabolism. I always wondered how the guy could down 2 big macs, extra large fries, 2 sodas and a apple pie with a shake and come back for seconds at the end of the shift.

Definitely not the airlines' fault, unless there's something not being reported here...but even then you can't really pin the blame on them. The woman could have easily gotten medical attention in Hungary. It's not the airlines fault that she was too stubborn to go to a hospital and it's also not their fault that they were unable to accommodate her. It sounds like they tried, but just couldn't do it.

I could rant about the "entitlement mentality".
People don't see consequences for their actions because they are entitled as "grown-ass adults" to do what they want and let others deal with the problem at the last minute.

If she had 2 brain cells to spare, she should have used a travel agent (instead of Orbitz or something) and pre-arranged ALL of the details. that way, if the airline gave her grief, she would have had paperwork to guarantee her seat(s).

Lastly, there are people with glandular issues.
    BUT...
i have seen way too many people who could curl their arms all day long to stuff their face, but are too lazy to change channels. that angers me.

Yeah..400+ lbs isn't a glandular problem, it's a too much garbage food problem. It doesn't matter how slow your metabolism is, if you consume less calories than you burn, you lose weight. Period.

So disappointed, my expectations given the thread title was that this was going to be a thread about The Fat Boys. Not cool.

The family HAD made the return arrangements, and since the airline was able to accommodate her for the flight to Hungary time it wasn't unreasonable to assume that they could for the return. The article states that on the return flight they were unable to accommodate her because of an issue with the plane (the seat's back), not an issue with her. The subsequent attempts with other airlines were unsuccessful because they didn't have adequate seatbelt extenders. From the sounds of it all the airlines went to extraordinary lengths to try to accommodate her, but it just wasn't meant to be.

Also, she had one leg. Whether or not it was removed before she gained weight or as a result of, it's a little harder to exercise when you don't have both.

what bad life choice did she make? Are you assuming that just because she is big that it was because she ate too much or was lazy?
SHe obviously had a kidney problem if she died of kidney failure and might have had a thyroid problem to go with it both of which cause weight gain.
My mother wasn't skinny but wasn't obese either however after her heart transplant she was on heavy doses of steroids which made her gain 75 pounds. SHe then had continuous kidney failure problems as a result which caused her to gain more weight. Kidney problme don't allow your body to process water so you gain weight from retaining water. Is that her fault? Is that a "bad life choice"?

You might want to think about all options before you call someone out on it.

And yes according to ADA she is entitled to special accomodations (even if she did "mjke a bad life choice")

That's what I thought.. The Fat Boys! Instead it's merely a vessel in which to be insensitive.
