It would be substantially weakened by the time it hit the Dallas area and not be much worse than a bad thunderstorm. Dallas is several hundred miles inland from the projected landfall, even if it keeps its current course. I'm sure we'll have some rain there, but that's about it.

would it be bad enough to delay or cancel flights though? That's my concern. Winds projected to be <39 mph by the time it hits N. Texas (if it hits). I'm flying out Sunday afternoon btw.

Prooobably won't be bad enough to cancel flights or anything..maybe delay a few at the worst depending on how bad it is when it comes through and how long it even stays that way. I flew outta NC last year in bordering-on-thunderstorm conditions. You climb above the clouds so quickly that it has to be pretty bad to be a concern. Be glad the con's not in Houston.

They say it'll hit south texas on saturday, and by then it'll probably just be a storm.

Unlikely. We are 3 hours from Dallas, almost directly even to Dallas from I-20, and by the time the storm hits, it should be just a storm, no major winds, etc.; unless something funky happens like with Katrina, and that is hard to say

Frisco is 3 hours from Dallas? I thought it was only 30 minutes. At least, that's how far Frisco is from DFW airport I thought.

I think he means 3 hours from Shreveport, where BTAG are located.

Anyway, yeah, as far as flights, it's hard to say. There could be delays if the storm is bad, but probably not cancellations.

It would be really stupid to underestimate a hurricane's potential.
The gulf of mexico loves to cyber key hurricanes.
I hope that wherever it makes landfall
everyone (and their pets) are long gone. If houston is hit we are all in big trouble...

I am suppose to be flying into Houston on Thursday at 10:05am and then Flying out to Dallas Love at 11:05am. I hope that they don't close Houston Hobby or I will be screwed.

The weather channel just said that tomorrow, Houston is suppose to Start mandatory evacuations.

    WHAT?!?!?!?
If they are evaculating this early then I can forseen problems with flights on Sunday. I too am leaving on Sunday and having worked at the airport can honestly say that they will cancel / delay flights for the littlest things sometimes.
I'm a little worried but made plans for staying overnight if it happens. I suggest you all do the same.

They just showed the projected path of that Hurricane and its headed To Galvaston/Houston at a Cat5 and then onto dallas at a Cat1/Tropical Storm Sat night Sun Morning, that was the latest 5 minutes ago from CNN. I just hope everybody in Houston gets out so we dont have a repeat of Katrina.

P.S. get ready for some jacked up gas prices becase all of the refinery's are in its path. And crude is almost trading at $70 again which means gas could very well go to $4.00 a gallon within the next 5 days.

Glad I own a 35 miles to the gallon Scion xB!

    Best Transformers analogy EVER.

But really, I don't think there's anything to worry about unless your flight is routed through Houston. Worst thing that could happen is a few hours delay-- remember, the storm will hit Dallas late Saturday/early Sunday. By the time people start going home late Sunday afternoon, we'll probably be on the tail end of the storm.

That's what I heard. They're evacuating people from the coast to the Dallas area.

As far as the weather goes...
The daughter of a colleague of mine is a meteorologist, and she said Rita could still be at tropical storm strength by the time it hits Dallas. So, tornadoes and 12" of rain could be possible in that area.
Of course, that's still speculation at this point.

I called Botcon about cancelling ( I just wanted the figures anyways...even though it is kind of sucky), they said no problem and that people who can't make it and paid for the Primus package will automatically get the figures sent to them. I don't know if it means you have to pay for shipping or they pick it up, but you will get your figures. So, I figure I might as well cancel.
