Who's ready for it? I just got done booking reservations in Williamsburg, Va for a worst case scenario and I'll be heading down to Va on Thursday all the while hoping this storm drifts on by in the Atlantic. Hurricane Isabel is still way to fresh in our memories and if its anything like Isabel were hauling tail from Hampton Roads. We had 7 trees come down on our street alone and were without power for 21 days. Having an insulin dependent cat and having no electricity is not going to work. I don't think it will amount to much because I'm heading down but I know what will happen if I don't.
Right now, the projected path from NOAA shows it coming ashore near Myrtle Beach. I've only lived down here for 3.5 years, so I haven't had to deal with a hurricane. I'm hoping we're far enough inland that we don't have any problems, but we've had some drainage issues that heavy rains could exacerbate. I work with several guys from around Charlotte that had to deal with Hugo. Even though it made landfall near Charleston, SC, it was still a Category 1 by the time it reached Charlotte. They were without power for weeks, and since most of the homes weren't built to hurricane standards, were picking up a lot of pieces.
I've been through seven hurricanes in my life and I don't want anymore of them. I told my family when we get hit again and if my place is destroyed, I'm moving away from Pensacola.
Yeah I have gone through a few myself living in Hampton Roads with Hurricane Isabel being the worst we've rode out. I wanted to leave when I heard Isabel was a Cat 4 lucky for us, she weakened to a Cat 3. On a side note after Katrina hit, it really did bring out the worst in people. I had to head down to Texas because my Uncle had a stroke and on the way back in Texarkana, I happened to meet this family. The woman was asking if I knew of Hurricane shelter in town and all the while this group of men were starting to surround me as I was pumping gas. I looked at ringleader and I could see exactly what he was thinking, bastard was thinking of stealing my truck. Really, jackass? I knew it was bad in New Orleans and I know that disasters bring out the worst in people, but come on. I stared his ass down and luckily he figured out I wasn't falling for it; they got in the car and truck took off. I don't want to think of how that young man got that truck but I hoped they got to where they had to go peacefully.
7 years ago, we had FOUR hurricanes come through our county in a matter of weeks. But I'm praying for those in the path of Irene, anyway. Good luck, and get prepared now.
Been awhile since I've had to worry about a Hurricane coming up the east coast. Hopefully it won't get too close to Myrtle Beach.
