I think that's pretty much the thread's consensus.
Honestly, that sounds like a jump the shark moment. I mean if it's part of an one-off plot involving some alternative timeline shenanigans or something silly... but it would be kinda be an crazy balancing act in the most metaphorical way possible.
it'd mean nothing to me
But that's just because I'm not on board with these now endless kinds of changes done for the sake of nothing more than flat out pandering. They're never "edgy"... they're never "progressive"... they're never "thought provoking"... they're never "with the times"... they're never "forward thinking"... they're never "provocative"... they're never "inclusive". They're just bullshit. Crazy idea: create NEW characters for all these supposedly necessary void fills - don't destroy the existing ones for sake of placating the little gaggles of self righteous Tweeter hashtaggers or the trendy outrage culture of millennials, soccer dads and bored housewives that hate ALL the things only while they're doing their world changing fingertip swiping activism from the comfort of their own toilets for 5-10 minutes every morning.
But I suppose that's not very 2019 to say out loud, so...
Being 2019 is overrated.
Solus Prime would be acceptable. No need to gender swap a franchise character when you have a perfectly good one in need of decent storyline and much needed toy representation.
How do you make a robot female? Just make it sort of look like a female human with metal breasts and a slim waist?
You have everything from this:
And everything inbetween. Take your pick.
I guess I was approaching this with a very different mindset then most of you. I was thinking not of some stylized "chick" design, but the now standard Optimus design, filling the same role, only voiced by a female voice actor (Like Jennifer Hale), and with the appropriate conversions, ie, motherly instead of fatherly. Then again, I was also thinking that OP in such a series would actually have a character, like in Marvel comics and Animated, who'd get angry, or have fun, etc. rather then be a mere plot prop, like say, Prime.
I thought we already have a female Optimus Prime....
I'd love to see a major female Prime, but gender-swapping Optimus feels wrong to me. That's like having Starscream transform into anything other than a fighter jet, or making Storm from X-Men white, or leaving Liu Kang's bicycle kick out of the next Mortal Kombat game, along with Johnny Cage's nut punch and Scorpion's spear ("GET OVER HERE!!!"). You just don't do it.
My impression is that most here had the same idea in mind...
I'll be like, what's the point of this? A publicity stunt?
Let's pretend that Hasbro or IDW announced that OP would be a fembot for the foreseeable future:
1) fans would rage harder than when OP died in the '86 movie.
2) Progressives would be all about it because "it's not the appearance that counts"
3) would be seen as a publicity stunt or an attempt to draw in more of the other 50% (how many female TF fans do we have here?)
4) if done right nobody will care afterwards
I wasn't reading the IDW comics when it was revealed that some characters were gay (homotronians??) so I'd like to know how did fandom react to those revelations and did they accept and move on or thought it was just garbage writing?
I only read the news stories and since I had no affinity for the characters to begin with I just shrugged it off. I thought it was weird and never really gave too much deep thought regarding a robots sexual preference.
If OP was genderswapped personally I wouldn't worry since it wouldn't last too long, just ride it out and see what comes of it.
However if the intent is to have a female lead the Autobots I'd just say have Elita-1 take over.
Windblade is pretty much a female version of Oppy.
To be honest, I would not like a female Optimus Prime. Don't get me wrong, I would not go into a rage if it was to happen but I would prefer a current female Prime to be an all new character so that way they can build her own mythos and canon going forward without having her be in the shadow of being just another Optimus Prime or having people compare her to previous Optimus incarnations. Also if she proves to be a favorable character, she can be used in future series as well.
Fine by me if they got a good voice for her.
So if an existing female TF were made a Prime (or similar high ranking commander) and had to headline a new show/toyline, who would be the best pick?
We’ve heard Elita-1 nominated a few times. Anyone else that could do the job?
Hmmm... the only other existing candidates I can think of are Override, Pyra Magna, and maybe Windblade. None of the rest really seem like Prime material, not even Arcee. I'd also accept a brand new character rising through the ranks and becoming a Prime, provided that said character is well-written and likable.
