So I am thinking of selling off my Fansproject City Commander and getting a CW Ultra Magnus. Is this a good move? Is CW Magnus a good figure or should I keep what I already have

I can't comment on how it compares to City Commander, but I love the CW figure. It's not perfect, but it's nice and a worthy edition while you can still get it at regular price.

I rate him very difficult to find. The Targets around here skipped his wave, the Meijers don't carry the Leader Class at all, and the Walmarts and Toys-R-Us are just horrible places to try to find anything.

CW Ultra Magnus is a fun toy to flip back and forth. FP City commander feels more solid/premium.

For some reason I didn't really like CW Ultra Magnus until I painted his rims silver. To me it makes a world of difference.

I never liked that face on City Commander anyways. Seems more like something from Transformers Prime.

Even with a few too may IDW cues for my tastes, he's pretty solid in robot mode, aside from including the idiotic mini figure (seriously, the entire concept is so dumb I won't even type his rediculously lame name) which gives him some unsightly gaps around his head. And he's wearing clown shoes for some reason.

I went with the Takara version, because: better deco, painted rims, they made the little guy into Alpha Trion which was clever IMHO...

His truck mode, OTOH, is pretty bad. Not really scaled right to look good with anything except Scout-class cars (and the trailer is even too short for them to look comepletely "right") and they cab is pretty ugly plus someone made the really odd decision of making him a MEGA rig (he has these mini ladders and doors on the side that make him look like his cab is supposed to be 50-60' tall) that aren't really a huge deal, but do invite some questions that never needed to be broached if they'd just sculpted the detail to the scale he seems to be otherwise.

And not gonna lie, I'd have much preferred he had a cab with a robot mode (although not as much so as Ginrai)

But he's much, much more on model then City Commander (who I've had from day one) his plastic never felt right and his head sculpt is pretty off. He was clever when Classics was all we were going to ever get, but seems pretty sophomoric to me today.

The good of ultra magnus is it's well-thought out transformation that looks pretty good. Scale nuts don't like it largely because of truck mode, but it's not all that bad if you're not a scale nut.

The bad is the same old song and dance for hasbro: hollowness everywhere, feels a little flimsy due to lack of plastic which means it's not that solid especially in robot mode. It's like a really good idea for a design that had the materials budget of voyager onslaught. If you have leader jetfire, it's thinner, more hollow, and less solid than that by a good margin.

I had City Commander and it pales in comparison to CW Magnus. It's by far a much better figure. Much better representation if Ultra Magnus.

I don't know how to compare it to City Commander, as I've never handled it. But CW Magnus is a very fun transformation, and a really good representation of the IDW version.

Minimus Ambus is the main reason to buy him. If you like MTMTE, congratulations, you have a Wonderful Thing That Should Not By Any Rights Exist.

I'd give CW Magnus a 9.5/10. Great sculpt, neat transformation, looks great in both modes. My only complaint is that he can't hold his guns very well.

I just got him this week. I don't buy third party stuff because of the expense but I think City Commander has the most godawful proportions (because it is a suit of armor, after all), plus I think the head sculpt is atrocious. My main criticism of CW Magnus is that he's based on the IDW version mostly and not his original G1 appearance. That includes the fact that he has that little Minimus Ambus guy who fits in his chest, who "wears" Magnus as a suit of armor. I don't read the comics but I don't really like that whole concept from what I've read about it. Also, Ambus has nowhere to go in vehicle mode. Technically he has tabs that line up with grooves near the front of the trailer but they're useless. You might get the idea that he can just fit in the truck cab, but Magnus' head goes there in vehicle mode.

Besides the IDW nonsense, he's pretty awesome. Really good proportions, an awesome vehicle mode that really resembles his G1 toy, and his transformation is super fun (not too hard and not too easy). And he just looks like Ultra Magnus should. People complain that his legs are too hollow (same with Galvatron) but they kind of have to be in order for his feet to go anywhere in vehicle mode, otherwise the whole thing would have to be redesigned. He's actually extremely sturdy in both modes if you transform him correctly.

I have the TakTom Legends figure and he's pretty good.

Once I added most of the upgrade kit to him he became fantastic!

You can still get cw ultra magnus at bbts for 39.99. That's where I got mine. Love it. I regret not getting him at retail 1 year ago. Solid figure.
