As the title says, How Would You Feel If This Happened To You? :

Back in the summer of 2008, I moved in with 2 friends of mine from the community workshop for people who are disabled, and they offered me a room for rent at $200 a month. In October two guys approached us at a local mall and gave us a sob story about how they were from another part of the state and claimed they were about to become homeless. My friend and her husband took pity on them and took them into our home. These guys never once paid her rent, caused a divorce between her and her husband, scammed her out of hundreds of dollars and then scammed me out of about just the same. In April the cops came in and ran them out, but by then the damage was already done. The two guys destroyed her home, were making death threats and just so much crap happened all at one time. They convinced us they were our friends, had her and me fooled the most because we both get SSI and they were taking our money from us saying they were putting it to better use.

Now over almost 2 months' time has gone by since this happened and I am finally moving into a place of my own, no room mates, nothing, because I am too afraid to let someone into my home, for fear this may repeat itself. At the same time I feel great rage and frustration with the two men, since they used a mentally disabled person as well as me. How would you feel if this happened to you? I'm just curious as to how people would feel about something like this.

it wouldn't happen to me first of all..because to most people I don't know, I could care less if they're homeless and die out in the cold or heat..I'll give 'em a buck or so out on the road, but invite them to my own house? Screw that...I don't even invite my friends to my house...

I'm not really heartless, I just think people are only looking out for themselves, so I distrust everyone..

Your friends invited complete strangers to live with them. I don't care how bad and downtrotted they must've looked there's no way you should trust people you have never seen before. At first sight of trouble you should have called the cops and get rid of them. I can't tell you how I'd feel because I don't trust people easily, in fact a close friend of mine for 8 years once tried to get me to invest thousands on a property to build apartment complex on, that was just before the real estate bubble bursted. Not only did I not fork over the money it ended up destroying our friendship because I had a feeling it was going to be a scam of some sort and I stopped trusting him after that.

I'd feel pretty stupid. Because, honestly, that's how you look with that story. I am not trying to be mean, but you let two strangers take you and the people you stayed with for everything you were worth, and now lament with rage that they did it?

As I told someone just a few minutes ago, you reap the seeds you sow. Always remember - the people in this life that need help the most are the ones that refuse to ask for it.

Oh come on now, what else would you expect them to say?

Dude, you seem like a nice guy and all for doing something like this for two complete strangers, but there is a thin line between being nice and being too nice and you crossed that line by a mile.

I'm sorry, but these weren't estranged relatives or family... they were TOTAL STRANGERS.

Next time, just give them some change and wish them luck...

Your own fault. The next time homeless people accost you at the mall, throw change at them to distract them, then get the hell out of there. It boggles the mind that you would invite them to live at your house, then be shocked that they stole your SSI.

Never invite the homeless to your home. Or let them know where you live. By all means help them by giving them some food or money for food and point them to the nearest homeless shelter.
For all you know this was a scam right from the very start. They probably weren't even homeless.
I dunno - if I'm hanging off a cliff by one arm and rapidly losing my grip I'd shouting pretty damn loudly for help. :p

I think I'd be feeling pain from the massive head trauma I'd have to suffer before saying "Hey, you homeless guys! Come live with me!" I really hope you're making this up in an attempt to be funny.

My perspective on this whole thing is the same as the others. You let strangers from the street move in with you. I look at it as a matter of trust. Trust is something you earn, not something you are given. You and your friends really tried to do something nice for these people, and they screwed you over. To be honest, this really shouldn't come as a surprise that it happened. They were homeless, and saw an opportunity to take advantage of a situation and use it for their gain. If that means screwing over people that are trying to do something nice for people they don't even know, so be it. Chalk this up to a life experience that I hope you won't repeat.
