If parts of the direct market want to suicide over this, then they're free to do so. *shrugs* We're living in times of increasing non-direct, non-physical retail for hobby items. Publishers and readers will do without the stores, but the stores will not do great in this kind of "war".

In the end the readers will only care if they'll get the books and for how much, not from where they're buying.

Not that I'd expect sensible arguments from people who want to maintain the existing status quo, but if Diamond's white knights are arguing in their favour in on the basis of them not being a monopoly then why have they got a problem with other distributers proving said argument?

I'm a comic book fan, not a direct market distribution fan. I'll still find comics to read and enjoy with or without Diamond or even the Big Two and any of the other crass and often soulless Hollywood IP comics being belched out now. Even if it's just reprints, back issues or manga. It's all still comics.

It's great that they're covering their health care but you usually can't apply for unemployment if you're furloughed :(

While it's good that they're looking out for the health of their employees my morbid side is curious how long long it was gonna be until this happened with or without the current pandemic, since we already know that IDW wasn't exactly in the best situation before this whole thing.

The entire industry is in turmoil, the comic shops are closed, Diamond is closed.

Basically they need to go to digital; or make new digital exclusive, so that the physical businesses when they can have something.

Seems to be the problem with only one major distributor. Setting aside the conflicts of comic stores acting as distributors, this does beg the question whether we really need Diamond to be the only one? If this is successful, perhaps Marvel and IDW will also shift to multiple distributors, ensuring a broader reach and competition to boost sales.

Might mean more comics, more exclusives, who knows?

If IDW goes this direction too, perhaps they can start publishing again and re-hire.

A monopoly is always wrong, for any industry. The situation was a pathology since a looong time. It's just that everyone got used to it.
