I can see some of those shops having a right to some aid, maybe a few of the publishers. Diamond? Naw, they chose to shut down when they could have still shipped. Viz? I think enough non-Comic Book shops shopping avenues remained opened to not hurt the manga business. SDCC?? Absolutely not, they make enough money the other years around, they can stand to miss one without fearing they'll be wiped out.

I was going to post to the effect that Valiant has only a single TPB release in October, which is a graphic novel collection of one of their new books. They have only two monthly books solicited. Some of that is normal as there was a "Pencils down" order at Valiant. But in the next few months you're going to start to really see the kick from the company shutdowns as we're getting into the place where the work deferred during the shut down impacts new books.

Wow, I hadn't seen that. It'll definitely be interesting to see how the bottleneck will impact things.

Well for Valiant, they may be done actually. They’ve closed their last physical offices. They have a press release out to the effect that everything is fine, and work continues remote but given they have only one book coming in October....

The bottleneck is an entire industry thing. I’d have though comics would handle it better. But we will see this bottleneck across the whole industry from TV, to movies, to video games

And whoops. I was wrong. They have three books: Rai, Bloodshot, and a single TPB. Rai and Bloodshot were confirmed to be done before the “pencils down” order came from Valiant in March.

In fairness, my wife's company did just realize they can do remote forever and closed up their physical space. She's busy as heck, but her boss just finally realized the rent on the office was a needless expense in this day and age. So, even if there's a magic vaccine tomorrow, she works from home full time now.

That said, I do expect to see some companies fold from all of this.

DC has been working remotely for months, as well. So while Valiant only having one book in October may be a sign of trouble, closing their offices to work remotely may just be a sign of the times.

I’m hopeful they make it. That’s just going to be a rough October.
