It will turn transparent plastic brittle enough that it will basically disintegrate. I've had some luck using a magic eraser. It dulls up the plastic a little, but it's still structurally sound. Just be ready for a lot of scrubbing.

Be very careful with 91% Isopropyl alcohol, dont leave it on the plastic for longer than 30sec. I fucked up my Starscream with that, especially on thin places like around a pin it tends to bend and then crack.

What are you trying to fix?

Most people like solvent method, but since plastic type is unknown, you could easily melt the plastic (or have it slowly disintegrate over weeks). At least with Siege clear plastic, people have reported that plastic melting with isopropyl alcohol. You could try soaking in windex, but you may still need to do a lot of scrubbing (use a spare toothbrush), and your pieces may smell like window cleaner for a long time.

Mechanical removal may end up being the ultimate choice. This means sanding off the acrylic paint. Over (heavily) molded surfaces, that's not gonna work well, though. Over smooth / flat surfaces, then it may work well. Start with lower grits and gradually work up to highest grit paper you can find (3000 grit or higher is preferable). I avoid the sand looking paper. I prefer the black sanding paper where you don't feel the individual granules. Always wet sand. To make it "clear" after sanding clear plastic, you either need to buff (not a great idea for most thin TF plastic and a buffing wheel can easily eat your plastic pieces) or use multiple light coats of clear acrylic spray to fill in all the microgaps on the surface.

I used nail polish remover and applied it with cotton balls and cotton swabs, though it's a bit acidic so be careful

Nail polish remover has acetone in it...which is a big no-no for plastics.

And what if the paint is in some detailing (grooves, gaps etc.)?

That unfortunately is the most difficult one to do. I have removed paint and polish from grooves and mold lines before but typically involves scraping with a hobby razor tip or very fine hobby saw. You can browse the local hobby shops and see the thinnest blades they have.

Well, if it's just acrylic, you might wanna try OxyClean before using anything more drastic.

Just toss the powder in a bucket, fill the bucket with warm water, put your figures in and let them sit overnight.

I've done this a few times with Tamiya acrylics and it works like a charm without hurting the plastic. If that doesn't work, then, yeah, a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol, a cotton swab, and a LOT o patience around the clear bits.

Give it a shot, then. At worst, you're out a few bucks on the OxyClean, but I'm pretty sure it'll work for you.

Not at all, not that I could find. I mean, it's essentially just a laundry additive. Pull your figures out, rinse them off, let them air dry, and you're set to go.

Heck, most folks recommend that you use some gentle detergent (usually dish soap) to clean off your figures before painting just to get the mold release off. This isn't that different.

Does it matter if the OxiClean is a powder or not?

They have liquid versions so I was curious. Hmm... I'll see about testing it.
