I was watching a movie today and it got me thinking as to how Ratchet got his name.
I always thought Ratchet got his name because of some sort of tool called a Ratchet (I am not a tool person so if there is no such tool then how am I supposed to know)
Then today i was watching "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and of course the head nurse's name (the mean nurse) was dubbed Nurse Ratchet. Now Ratchet has been known to not exactly have a good bedside manner and was wondering if that is how Ratchet got his name.
The writers of Transformers that it not like Optimus giving him that name or something.
The writers thinking of the medic without a good bedside manner throwing in an homage to the Cuckoo's nest movie and called him Ratchet as a result.
    Thoughts?
Was it ever said anywhere else how the writers came up with the transformers names?

Bob Budiansky confirmed that he indeed named Ratchet after the nurse.

Yeah, I honestly thought it was tool related at first too, and didn't even know about "Nurse Ratchet" until maybe 3 months ago when somebody mentioned it on this forum. :)

Or maybe I read it in a bio or something, but TFW was still responsible in some manner.

    Ebay:
He was almost named "Cool Hand Lube" vs the original Cool Hand Luke... oh, the hilarity that would have ensued...

Budiansky came up with the lion's share of the Transformers' names, with at least a couple thrown in by Jim Shooter, and I've read a few interviews with Budiansky where he says he really didn't put too much thought into the names. He came up with all of them in one weekend, just throwing random words together that sounded cool.

I want to say that some of this, plus the Ratchet-from-Ratched story, is told in the Transformers Vault book, but I won't swear to it.

    Didn't I ask this same question month's ago? :)

Yep, definitely from that movie. Pretty cool eh?

So could you say Ironhide came from Ironman? :D

Lol... Actually I presume it's more about the Raymond Burr show from the 60s called Ironside.

Yup, especially considering Ratchet was originally envisioned as a female.

Denny O'Neill came up with the name Optimus Prime, too.

Jim Shooter has a blog out there that has a lot of this info actually. Well, some of it at least.

He received that name because in the distant future, he helps save the universe from Emperor Percival Tachyon and Doctor Nefarious with his ally, Clank.

    What? Oh, wrong series. :D
