Just wondering if there is any way to learn or estimate how many copies of TF:TM (1986) were sold through the years? Every VHS rental store had one The Laserdisc prints sold out The Rhino DVD presumably eventually sold out The anniversary DVD sold well? The BluRay seems to have sold well Is the number closer to 10,000 or 100,000 units?
I dont think anyone knows but man this movie has had to make Hasbro a ton of money over the years. It was a financial failure at first ( or so I heard ) but after all these years, man its really racked up some cash for hasbro or so I presume
It bombed in the theaters but reached cult status almost immediately, thanks to cable tv and home video. In terms of units, 10k is nothing. 10k is almost the same as 0, so it has to be much more than that.
I found DVD sales numbers! Before the-numbers.com SQL broke this morning, the website showed ~110,000 DVD unit sales from TF:TM's (1986) re-release in 2006. Source: The Transformers: The Movie (1986) - Financial Information For comparison: Transformers (2007) sold about 15 million DVD units in the USA (excluding Blu-Ray) All-Time Best-Selling Blu-ray Titles in the United States: All-Time Best-Selling Blu-ray Titles in the United States - The Numbers
I suppose that doesn't surprise me too much since the 1986TFTM re-release graced bargain bins for quite some time...
