Just bought him, there wasn't any clear indications in the instructions on how they operated. I found a button I could press that was behind the battery compartment. I tried putting a weapon in his right hand and pressing the button, but no lights. Am I way off base here?

 

Dumb question, but did you pull out the little clear tab that blocks tha battery connection? You should be able to see the light even without a weapon.

 

Qft. yup pls pull out that clear plastic tab (disposable) & all would be fine.

 

Yeah, make sure the clear acetate paper is completely removed. And if you did and the problem hasn't resolved, then unscrew the cover, make sure the flat cell battery is properly installed. If this still fail, then maybe one of the wires is loose.

 

I didn't even know he had electronics. Is that the only gimmick he has or does he other other electronic stuff? LED eyes perhaps?

 

No light up eyes. His dino eyes are clear, but they're painted over. His robot eyes are chromed. Just the light up right first, to energize his sword or blaster.

 

It has the tail whacking & jaw bite button gimmick too, but those are not electronics.

 

..and you can change the color of his eyes from blue to red in both modes.

 

I've heard from a few people that Grimlock is showing up with dead batteries. Perhaps swapping in new batteries will bring his light up hand back to life.

 

he he he im working on a mod with my usa version to make his dino eyes light up, wont dare damage my takara version (damn usa version got nerfed with dental work and a manicure)

 

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. I did remove the plastic protector as that breaks the battery connection. Pressing the button causes no lights to flash, so perhaps my batteries are bad. I'll run them through the multimeter to make sure they have sufficient charge, and if not, replace them.

 

hopefully the electronics are okay.

another gimmick is while in dino mode, you can push grimlock up and down and his head will nod up and down.
